I have answered this question SOOO many times.
First they do NOT do it to make themselves throw up!! They need the nutrition and fiber that is found in plants. The problem is, they eat the any kind of grass available and it isn't always the most digestible. (Or it's loaded with fertilizers, bug sprays, etc.)
If you feed your cat wheatgrass, spinach, or other easily digestible green, they will NOT throw up! When I make a salad, I'll tear up some spinach leaves for my cat and she thinks it's great stuff. I also give her a wheatgrass plant and she grazes on that just like a cow. Again, she doesn't ever throw up with that.
If I let her out in the yard (not often since I'm in an apartment) and she eats the grass out there, within a few hours, she's puking it all back up.

It appears that no one quite knows for sure. My cats love grass. On the rare occasion I let them outside...they make a bee line for the grass and then throw it back up 10 minutes later. Most articles I've read say that this is OK-that it's good for their digestive systems. I think some cats just like the taste of it.
Here's a brief article about it:

Cats eat grass because when they clean their hairs they stay in their stumok so cats need to get them out and they eat grass.

The grass settles their stomach and helps them to remove the hairballs. Some pet stores sell grass for indoor cats.

Cats still need their greens! They'll eat house plants sometimes if they don't get grass so I would be careful lol
It helps aid with their digestion and it can help pass hairballs as well.
You can even buy little containers of grass at petsmart labeled "Cat Grass" which I thought was kinda funny.

Dogs eat grass to empty their stomachs. Cats actually eat grass because it acts like dental floss and cleans their teeth.

I've heard that cats eat grass as a medicine for their stomachs. If they vomit after eating it then you know they ate something that didn't agree with them, or they had too much fur(from grooming themselves) go into their stomach, or they just had a tummy ache(like many people get once in a while)!
