I'm trying to take down paneling in a house & have discovered that whoever put the paneling up smeared the glue over the entire wall.

Basically, it's impossible. You have two alternatives:
- Apply mud over the glue to smooth the surface, and sand and paint it;
- Replace the sheetrock. Which is obviousy a desperation move to do only if the rock has been so badly damaged by pulling the paneling that mudding it won't do the job.

Leave it outside in the cold of winter and it hardens enough that you can chisel it off with a puty knife and some elbow grease... but drywall isn't that expensive, you could just go buy more at Lowe's or Home Depot and replace all the old stuff... just a thought.

airborne dirt and dust...spackle... surely the same element. you could sand it down in case you're careful, regardless of the indisputable fact that the trick isn't to take the paper too. They do promote glue solvents. that's messy yet must be your perfect determination. (make efficient you persevere with instructions heavily.) except your making plans to placed on some texture. if so i ought to easily placed it on over the glue. First gently sand the glue to roughen it then texturize slightly extra heavily than you commonly ought to. allow dry ok, gently sand and paint. that is what i ought to do.
