Jeans would be a bad idea. Pants are okay, as long as they're part of a formal suit. Cocktail dresses and gowns (I'm assuming you're female here) are ideal. Skirts and tops work but are less formal. Depending on where you're going, don't go with anything too revealing.

Black always works, and it makes you look thinner. You can even wear black at weddings these days.

Red really stands out. If you want to stand out, stop traffic, etc., wear red; otherwise avoid it like the plague.

Solid colors always work and are classic, timeless and tasteful providing you're not wearing neon green), but if you choose a print, its better if it's (a) obviously tasteful, and (b) not a part of a shirt/skirt set.

Long, fluid lines and strappy heels are what you're looking for.

Good luck!

Dress arrangements should be as follows: -

Dress length should mid calf length or below, anything higher and you start looking at semi formal/cocktail.

There use to be an issue regarding strapless dress but with the modern dress codes, well most arrangements go.

Your partner should be kitted out in a dinner suit with black tie (by black tie that means bow tie).

That's really formal in a nutshell so anything else is really a no go!

You should only wear formal attire to a formal party. Anything less is informal. http://www.bellaonline.com/articles/art21667.asp

Do not wear covered shoes. Wear heels. A dress is must, no 2-piece blouse/skirt etc.

No casual clothes. No sneakers. Nothing in bad shape. No scuffs on shoes.

A gown would be best. Maybe you can get away with a blouse/skirt combo. Heels.

No jeans. Duh.
