Not possible in america. However, i think it would help remove the "thug mentality" kids get today simply from music and older relative.

2 years is too short, but gang bangers who emerge from military would have better chance of hitting targets in gangwars, and kill less innocent civilians.

But i see this as no benefit to americas military strength. Possibly hurting our military due to needing to pay all thouse people for service. Means misdirected funds if we dont keep em.

I think it would help. You'd be able to impart a level of discipline into them and teach them some respect. They would also have the opportunity to see the world as it really is- not through the slanted view of the media. Perhaps then most of our citizens would not take what they've got for granted.

For those who think you can't change people who don't want to be there, there is validity in that. What the military is good at doing, however, is taking care of problem children. If soldiers don't want to be there and become discipline problems, it can be a very painful two years. Worst case scenario, they'd be confined until their duty is up. It's much easier to put on a happy face and play the game.

I am of 2 minds on this subject.
A) If a person is "forced" to go into the military they are less likely to give their best, and More likely to become a disciplinary problem, or worse.
B) If a person goes into the military, it could teach him/her skills and discipline they would not get else where, and it could help them to be more self aware of their faults and strengths...
I personally don't want to see any person in the military that isn't willing to give their very best, and less than their best can get some one killed at the right time or wrong place...

There are countries that military service is mandatory so that it can mobilize its citizens in case of war. Thus, it depends upon your country where you live because have no choice when it is required under the law. Anyway, it helps the youth to be physically and mentally fit. Moreso, the youth are trained to be disciplined due to the regimental life of the soldiers.

Yeah, so many punks these days only care about who's going to be the winner of fcuking american idol; what new video is out, and how cool they are to be the one of the 1st to own a it; trying to grow up too fast, when half of the em' can't even count money accurately or not look like a trash. Serving for 2 yrs. would definitely give them a perspective of what really matters and they will learn discipline and how not to be so trashy and learn to care about more important things than who lindsay lohan (or how the fcuk you spell it) is dating etc.

Definately. However, I will not conclude the duration as compulsory but this measurement is a rough gauge in cultivating the youth character, discipline, integrity and attitude in life. The whole process is validated into bringing youth of different upbringing, education background. language, religion and beliefs to live and work together as a team.

Perhaps you may want to speak to any NSmen, they will have tons and tons of stories, misforgivings and grievances to relate. One thing for sure, their experiences in NS will live in their minds forever. The truth is that they will always treasure these memories as many life lessons are learnt .... "You do not know your limits unless you exceed your limits".

Oh yes. I am an Indian, and strongly recomend it to bring some amount of descipline in the people in India. Unfortunately they seem to behave only under threat of punishment.

Discipline needs to be drilled into them. 2 yrs in military is a good way of doing it. It will also result in reduction of defence expendeture in India,

It would just turn the world even more psychotic than it already is. It is crippling enough sending them to school!!! Send people into the country and make them live off the wild - farming, hunting, slaughtering for food - if you want to show people what life is really about. Not that the world can support that any more.

And i will respect authority when it is worth respecting, thank you!

No I feel it should be a freedom of choice when joining the military. Not everyone is prepared for all of the challenges it faces. And as far as help, Help what?
