Does it matter?

The only person who can answer this question is Prof Stephen Hawking himself. It would be quite interesting to know the answer though!

For Sean V, Prof Stephen Hawking is a World famous physicist, he wrote A Brief History of Time. Not only is he amazingly clever and a talented Physicist he is severely disabled with a REALLY nasty disease which should have killed him years ago. He really has an able mid trapped in a disabled body and shows us that anything possible! He is a true inspiration!

Hawking is quoted as saying "the universe is really self-contained, having no boundary or edge, it would have no beginning nor end, would simply be. What place then for a creator?"

Also, he has made it clear on many occasions that when he refers to 'god', his view is pretty much the same as Einstein. Here is what he said:

"It was, of course, a lie what you read about my religious convictions, a lie which is being systematically repeated. I do not believe in a personal God and I have never denied this but have expressed it clearly. If something is in me which can be called religious then it is the unbounded admiration for the structure of the world so far as our science can reveal it."   ~ Albert Einstein

Dr. Stephen Hawkins is the highest and finest expert in Quantum Physics in the world. It is a scientific field of study that usually gets very close to Meta-Physics and leave many theories as hypothesis... as they are unprovable by the Cartesian Scientific model...and it may give them thought about the Scientific patterens of the Universe...and the theory of a Universal Design which denotes a Universal Designer. So, the only one who can really answer this question... is Dr. Hawkins, himself... :)

anak sendu is clueless. The Big Bang theory is not Hawking's, it was first proposed by a Catholic preist.

And yes, he does believe in God, but more as a Deist rather than a Christian.

I once read that when he started out he was agnostic at best but the more he got into the universe he realized that there had to have been an outside influence. Now he leans towards the intelligent design theory.

Yes. Just not in your god.

Many people make assumptions that scientists (otherwise known as the intelligent ones) tend to be atheists. This is not true. Many scientists are agnostic rather than atheists. I don't know if I really meant "deist" or what when I said "agnostic," though.

Professer Steve (as I'm allowed to call him) was on Yahoo Answers the other day, in the celebrity bit. It might still be possible to post the question to him. If not, I'm sure many other people asked him this so hopefully the answer will be in there somewhere.

YES he does, I heard him say so during an interview. He said something to the effect that the Universe to simply to complex and enterwoven and too perfect to not be from a 'higher power' such as God.

To believe in God and to believe in religion are two separate things. Religion is the way a group perceives god , his likings , his teachings, his punishments....... But when you solely believe in God, it is not necessary that you you need to practice a religion. God could be superbeing or just nature or good old luck. So i believe he believes in GOD. He is the gifted one isn't he?
