A meal at a restaurant she loves (ask your husband which one ) .
I would also give flowers, and a bare-root rose plant. Ask her where she would like her son to plant it for her. Whenever she sees the rosebush, she'll remember your thoughtfulness. Or when someone tells her how gorgeous it is, she'll proudly tell them her daughter-in-law gave it to her as her 1st Mother's Day gift.
Note: if it's not planting season, give her tulip bulbs so she can save them and plant them at the right time. Get beautiful colors!
Of course, this could work with a regular potted indoor plant, too, if she's not the gardening type.
Good Luck!

You say that you send each other emails every day and yet you're not sure if she knows that you're separated? Maybe you're not as close as you think. That being said, Mother's Day is for persons to recognize their "mothers". Maybe you should be more concerned about what to do for your mother and let him deal with his mother. Your new situation changes your relationship, just figure out what is. She's not your mother and never will be. Maybe you should think about what your motive is. If it's all good - well - good! If you're trying to get at your potential ex, don't make Mom an issue.

American Mother's Day 2006 has already passed; I assume you're from the U.K. Mrs. Wizard's mom is an elegant, classy lady of "mature age"....and I was stumped on what to give her for Mother's Day.
By accident, I discovered these very classy, mini-wine bottle and exotic cheese baskets. A bit pricey, but I became a highly favored and beloved son-in-law when she got my gift.
She truly loved her wine basket, happily raving to her social club friends how wonderfully thoughtful I was to give such a unique gift to her.

That's a tough one. I met my mother in law for the first time 7 months ago and when I went over there I took a flower arrangment and candles. I got some really pretty fancy looking candles for her. I don't know every one is different. Good luck

Why not just plan to spend some if not all of the day with her. Take her to lunch at her favorite restaurant. The gift of your time is always the best and will enable the two of you to get to know each other better. Remember it is her day and treat her like a Queen

My mother-in-law loves gardening so I tend to buy her flowering plants like hanging baskets. She loves them. She also enjoys birds, so we get her bird feeders too. Find out what she loves to do and perhaps you'll find a way to help her enjoy that more. If she's into something like ballet, how about tickets to a performance?
