I have been driving on the same stretch of Motorway but have noticed six times now that a police car is driving behind me in my rear view mirror. The police cars have been too close when they are following me but they give NO indication they want me to stop (e.g I never see their flashers go on). I thought it was just me being paranoid but I have also tried to change lanes and they do follow me. Why are they doing this? Twice also they have folllowed me off the motorway. In all cases after about 15-20 minutes they usually move over and drive off. It is really intimitading & they are driving too close to me. I have sometimes been doing around 60mph & have found it difficult to break as they are right there behind me tailgating. Please can I have some advise as to what I should do if this happens again. I am female & drive by myself. I have felt like putting my hazard lights on & pulling over, but I know police can be heavy handed.I don't want to start an argument but do feel annoyed.

Have you checked to see if your speedometer is correct....usually a patrol car following you close means they are pacing you car....checking their speedometer against yours to see if your speeding.....check all your tail lights...brake lights...turn signals....make sure there's nothing wrong with your license plate....and if they are following you every time it may be that you get nervous and start swerving a little.....or if you continuously look into your rear view mirror at the patrol car behind you that will make the officers curious as to why and become suspicious of you............

Firstly - is it always the same officer? If so, the police are NOT above the law. If it is always the same officer, complain and have him issued with a first stage harrasment warning. If he does it again, he is arrestable.

Secondly - it may just be your car. Is it sporty? Does it stand out? Maybe it was once owned by a drug dealer/other known criminal and his ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) is picking this up and he's following you to put you off commiting any crimes. He probably would be aware you are not the criminal untill he/she gets to see your face.

Thirdly - did he see you get out at the service station wearing a short skirt, sexy boots and sexy top? If so, then he just fancies you :)

Or maybe it's just pure coincidence?

erm...where or who did you buy your car off? you might have a car that was owned by a criminal or something and the police think it still belongs to the criminal. Or maybe they are on a case where a criminal has a very similar car or reg number to yours. You could try calling a non emergency number and let them know whats going on, or pop into your local police station and tell them there. After all, if its becoming an irritation for you then you should let them know and make a complaint! Good luck

1. Who did you buy the car from?
2. is the car in good condition?
3. you may have a car similar to one they are looking out for which draws their attention to you
4.They may be trying to get a look at you before they pull you over and realise in fact you are not the person they thought you were(happens very often when they realise driver is female)
5. Is the car registered to you. or does it show no current keeper?
6. No offence but is your driving ok? Are you going over the spped limit trying to get away
7. Do you look a little shifty like you may be trying to get away?
8. Do you associate with people known to police?
9. Is your insurance, tax etc up to date?
Just a few ideas. I'm positive they are just not harrassing you for the sake of it!

Well your car probably matches a description of someone wanted.
The best thing to do if you have the time is to pull over,
And maybe they may tell you why they were following you.
But if they haven't pulled you over yet its probably just mistaken identity. Not to be worried about.
I thought the police in the UK are supposed to be friendly..? As ordered by the Queen

Good Luck .
PS if possible drive with a passenger then you have a witness.

Ask a friend at work to go with you a few times & take a video camera with you.If you can obtain good video evidence of their tailgating, employ a barrister & sue for harassment.
I believe they do this a lot with attractive solo females & it really is a sick abuse of power.

The next time it happens take a note of the licence plate and report it to your local police station.
