I have done this; this is common courtesy. Think of all the nasty messes they clean all day long, not necessarily in your room, but in others. It is a thankless, rough job, and they certainly deserve to be thanked, and tipped.

I work in a hotel and it happens all of the time. In fact money often accompanies the note of thanks.

When you are provided exceptional service to somebody often they appreciate those efforts by letting management know, and then the worker in the form of tips.

You seem like somebody that would not do this, but I am sure that if an employee was rude and insulting to you, there would be no hesitation to writing management and saying that so and so insulted you.

It is the same thing in reverse. Maids are and I repeat Are the hardest workers in the hotel. Period, end of discussion.

In the hotel I work for...in eight hours including the half hour break they clean 18 rooms a shift.

So, you know that is hauling ***.

We all like to hear that our work is appreciated, and the best compliment that a hotel worker can get is a note to management saying they are doing an excellent job!

So, be kind to the maids...they work the hardest in the hotels so that you have clean rooms to stay in.

I have written notes to many in the service industry when they have done a particularly nice job. They may have gone out of their way, outside their realm of duties, or just paid close attention and realised you asked for more than the standard amount of towels and left that amount the next visit, unasked. That is a good service worker. Anticipating customers needs and supplying the demand BEFORE being asked.
I also will find the manager, if possible, and tell them that they have a good person in their employ.
I will also let appropriate people know if service was particularly bad. And then only in the interest of bettering the employee performance.

Show me how people treat people in positions of servitude and I'll show you their true character.

never actually witnessed it but it doesnt need much of an imagination as to why the maid of a hotel room is being left a handwritten thank you note...she must have been good, after all most people just leave a tip!! (p.s I hope its not your husband leaving the maid the note....guess he done some sight seeing of his own!!!)

Posses them? I think it is called courtesy. Maids work hard mostly and they do a job your mother hates. cleaning up after you. Making sure you have clean linen and rooms. A thank you note is like thanking so one for a job well done. And a tip is usually accompanied with the note. I have done this on several occasions.

I wrote a thank you note once to the maid when I left her a tip. I did it once because she was very friendly and we had a nice conversation, and the second time I did it, I asked the maid for some extra soap as souvenirs and she gave me many.

I remember writing a 'thank you' letter to a girl who worked in hotel...I think it was compassion to her, because she, in her young age, could not study in college but had to stay day and night cleaning after clients. We actually became friends after a week of my staying in her hotel, and I hope she would leave that job and do something more interesting and edifying.
It is not often that people write 'thank you' noted to maids, waiters or guards...But once you see their personality and honest labor, you can't help being grateful.
Blessings to you!

Just as I bring poor service to the attention of the management, I've written thank you notes to the hotel staff after receiving excellent service. I also try to speak to the manager and let them know in person how great their staff was during my visit.

All too often people in service industries only have comments on their performance when it's poor. When you're working in any kind of service it's great to know that you've been able to help a customer or that the customer was happy with the service they got.

Edited to add:
I'm in the wedding industry and I routinely send thank you cards to brides who use my services. It promotes good business, and often they refer me to their friends or famliy.

Yes, my aunt does all the time, and she always gets excellent service when she goes back to any hotel. People appreciate being told they have done their job better than they had to. she also remembers to leave a tip

I don't write a note, unless they have gone out of their way to be helpful...then I'll fill in the customer satisfaction card. I do however leave a tip...usually $5.
