The Idea of a god as such comes from our own ability to create things, the conclusion many ealier people came to was that there was a bigger more knowledgeable/powerful version of ourselves, thus the idea of gods was spawned.

The Egyptians had gods for everything, taking the logical conclusion that there had to be more than one because there was way too much for just one being to handle (there are other examples- rome/greece, although the plethora of egyptian gods are a fairly familiar example)

Then you have the mono-deity religions- Christianity,Judaism, Islam ect.. that dispense with reason and have one being responsible for it all, and you get the birth of omnipresence. However instrumental to this is the priests, prophets and anyone else who ever did anything in the "name of god", and as usual, human nature takes overand people end up fighting over who is right.

Take it at whatever level you personally feel comfortable with, with whatever you take as your god/s, and actually get the whole point of whatever holy book you read, and most all agree on the simple premise that you should be ok to everyone else and everyone else will be ok to you. this really works on a personal level although it gets slightly dodgy when you deal with organised religion(the crusades, the inquisition, the nazis, and the present day middle east)

In short, people are sheep, they have an instinctive need to follow, and 'god' serves as the ultimate alpha being.
On the flipside though it must suck to actually be god, because everything really is your fault.

God is the power that allows us to live, not necassarily a person. god can be anything. God can be the extra push in us that makes us do the right things. God is for us to focus on, or to rely on. There is a reason for our lives, and we can say the reason is god.

The word God does not always need to be looked as a name for a person. It can be looked upon as anything. Things that drive us to live a happy life, or a sad one. The voice in ourselves can be looked upon as god.

Religion tells us stories of a god, so we can learn from the stories and live a better life. Religion is a culture and without culture, life is too empty to live.
So, some people don't believe there is this person called god, because they know who their god is. If you're asking why they are still praying, then the answer is that it is culture and we as humans do need someone to rely on, to tell our hopes to, so it's god in the religion that most people turn to.

If you don't understand, try thinking with a clear mind. What is meaning of religion? Try thinking with an open mind.

By accepting the belief system that usually goes along with believing in a supernatural agency, such as a god, many people find it easier to cope with the complexities that make up life in the modern world. There are so many instances when, rather than make the hard effort of having to think about issues, people fall back on whatever their belief system tells them. Intelligent, rational people do NOT need to believe in gods, ghouls, or bogeymen because the intelligent are capable of thinking for themselves.

People need answers. If they don't have answers they look for a plausible explanation. If there is none then we certainly won't blame ourselves. So we've got to have a higher power that justifies everything. We need something greater than ourselves to lean on in times of doubt. So we say things like, "The Lord helps those who help themselves", or, "The Lord works in mysterious ways". We pray to God to give us strength and we find the strength because we want it sooo bad. When you think about it, the strength was within us all along. We're just too timid to realize it.

As a possible reasoning for our existence. People have always wondered why and how humans came to be on this planet, and why there are no life forms close to us that we can compare ourselves to. Not to mention to some people, it may seem convenient that our sun is just going through the middle of it's life and that our planet is just far away enough to sustain life on it without it dying out because of extreme weather (Which we often have anyway).

Because if we are interested in Truth -- the truth is that there is a God.

And our eternal destiny depends on whether we commit our lives to God or not.

For scientific and intellectual evidence for the existence of God, see http://www.godsci.org/gs/godsci/evidence.htm

I used to be an atheist. Over a period of time however, I grew convinced of the existence of the Christian God, and ultimately committed my life to Christ (e.g., see http://www.godsci.org/gs/chri/testimony/seek.html ).

Cordially,
John

We don't "need" to!
He is real though, so how can one "not" believe in something that exists?
Hey, just because you don't believe in gravity doesn't mean that it doesn't exist, right? All one has to do is experience it to know that it's real... the same with God. If you search Him out, He will find you! The problem with most people is that they aren't interested in finding Him... and that's their choice, but don't go talking about something you don't know anything about... it only shows your ignorance.

Not everyone feels the need to believe in a God, but for those who do - it is a source of inspiration and hope in times of trouble.

Presumably for the same reason that some people need to not believe in a god.
