Yes, you can shave them down, but don't make it too short - especially if they're going to be out in the sun. They have very sensitive skin that can get burned. Try to use a cheater blade that leaves the hair at least an inch long.

Yes. If your dog is in reasonable condition the groomer can "shave" it with a slightly longer blade like a #4, which will leave the coat long enough to protect the dog from sun and insects, but short enough to be comfortable, clean, and easy to maintain.

However, if the dog is very matted then the groomer will have no choice but to shave him VERY short, in which case you need to make sure he doesn't get sunburn and keep him in when the bugs are bad. And try to get him to the groomer before he gets in that condition again.

If your dog's coat is in very good condition, the groomer can do a "puppy clip" and leave the coat around an inch or so long, which is cute and easy to keep brushed, but it will likely cost a LOT more than a shave because it is a lot of work for the groomer.

there are 2 theories of though on shaving dogs with long coats. some say it is cooler, keeps the dogs from tangling, helps them be more comfortable.

others say the coat protects dogs from sunburn and actually acts as a temperature regulator-- keeping them warm in winter and cool in summer.

I say, if you aren't going to spend the time grooming your long haired breed, or if it has skin problems or fleas or you live in a blistering hot climate it is probably ok to shave the dog as long as you don't leave it outdoors.

If you mean shaving it down to the skin.. absolutely not. A dog needs their fur to protect them.. their own built in thermal unit. If you wanted to cut off 1-2 inches.. no problem but down to within 1-2" of the skin or down to the skin. NO NO NO

dont shave him bald. clip his fur to about a 1/4 in length. it'll help from them getting sunburnt but will help cool them off. my 8 month old has husky in her and has the thick undercoat of a husky plus the puppy fur in there and she keeps gettin heat stroke from it. i always shave my dogs so they have a 1/4 inch left

Yes you can. Some people who spin yarn will actually take the hair and spin it. From what I've heard, dog hair makes very warm, soft sweaters. I'm not kidding, my aunt's a spinner!

it can be beneficial, especially in the summer, a reduction in fur makes a cooler dog- but unless you KNOW what you're doing, take puppy to the groomer.
