Your question is anthropocentric! Even if spiders didn't help US in any way (and some of the answers show they DO), they would still be "helpful" as far as spiders are concerned, and as far as their ecosystems are concerned.
But creatures didn't arise on Earth to help anything! They evolved in ways that allowed them to take advantage of the environment around them and reproduce. Spiders were among the first forms of animal life to colonise the land, and they've been very successful for hundreds of millions of years. No doubt they will outlast us!

Their was an open nitch that the ancient ancestors of the spiders of nowadays took; as an insectavor.
Spiders help (why would an animal have to help, as, their only real purpose is to try to survive, and not please Humans) a lot as far as predating on many insect species are concerned, to lower their population.
And, Spiders also provide a decent food source for many animals, such as some birds that may eat them, and several Wasp species that lay eggs that will turn into parasidic larva on them, after paralyzing the spider with a sting, meaning Spiders also provide food and/or nutriants for some other animals.
Basically, Spiders fit a nitch in the ecosystem that is quite important, as a source of food/nutriants for some animals that either eat them, or use them as hosts, and they also predate on some insect species keeping their populations lower.
If all species of spiders where suddenly removed, the ecosystem would quite likely be drastically effected on the lower levels.
Also, as I mentioned, one animal doesn't exactly have to "help anything", to be able to exist, they just have to find an open nitch, and take it.
For example, many parasite species, such as tape worms, and heart worms, don't help anything, do they? Yet, they still exist, as they've tooken open nitches, and filled them.
Not that I like these parasitic worms, or anything (I'd be much happier if they where extinct), I was just trying to make a point.
Have a nice day.

I assume you are like me, and find spiders less than attractive? Well you and I would make probably amongst the millions of other people who feel the same, they give me the creeps. But never the less, they do alot good for us, without spiders to eat bugs we would probably be over run with way to many bugs, and they also produce silk (the substance their webs are made of) which is used for beautiful things like clothing e.t.c. Also some spiders provide food for other animals, and even some societies which find eating spiders a delicacy, so you see they do exist for many good reasons.

Common household spiders are very efficient killers of insects that we find very annoying - like flies, mosquitos, bees, amongst others. That's why I never kill a spider I find in my house - at least, not on purpose.

They're also part of the food chain for birds. I'm on your side, though. I hate spiders.

if is wasn't for spiders we would be over-run with flies and other bugs. so they help keep the bug population down.
