My favorite beginner's dvd is from Patricia Walden-- I think it is distributed by Gaiam. She gives very thorough instruction and demonstration with suggestions for modifications of poses that you can't quite do. The pace is slow enough that you can easily keep up with her even when you don't really know what you are doing. You may find her video too slow after a while, but it will give you an excellent foundation for exploring other videos and books.

I have to agree with the previous respondent-- Iyengars are an excellent place to start your yoga practice. (Patricia Walden is Iyengar trained.) Their style of yoga is excellent for building strength and avoiding injury, and they are very mindful of the fact that not every body can do the same things.

I totally agree. Patricia Walden has 2 DVD's for beginners, and they are both excellent. She teaches in the Iyengar tradition, which uses props such as blocks, straps, chairs and bolsters to help you come into the pose with more ease.

Patricia Walden DVD's or any Iyengar yoga DVD is definitely the way to go.

I suggest that you avoid these new age yoga gurus and their supposed to be new styles. Try getting any DVD published by the BKS Iyengar School of Yoga.

Try something from Denise Austin...some people find her a little annoying but I like her and I think she keeps everything simple but effective. I had never done yoga before and I started using her fatblasting yoga tape last summer...I lost almost ten pounds just from that and a little Pilates.
