Which method is better at energy conservation?

1) Running 1 air conditioner in a raised ranch home (2nd floor - end), or running air conditioners in 3 - 4 rooms/day on economy mode?

option (1) economy mode should be used to sustain the cooler temp once the room is cooled. It would take a very long time to cool it that way.

It all depends on the differrence of capacity of your Aircons, Horsepower determine your energy consumption and BTUs base terminal units determine its cooling capacity per sq.ft/m and lastly your requirements for the rooms to be cooled or cold but don't forget to take into considerations of your local weather conditions.
Your questions are too vague for me to work out an acceptable answer for you. But bear in mind to ask your Aircon installer to work out the factors above, so as not to be disappointed after installations where you are not happy with the cooling effects and energy consumptions.
