but yes there does appear to be a genetic tendency towards it

often then triggered by an environmental stress

It has been studied that a particular amount of chemical in the brain can be linked to heredity. This gene can prevent the neurotransmitter gates from closing on time so particular chemicals such as dopamine are left lingering in between synapses. So yes studies point towards hereditary linkage with depression. Personally, I do not believe that there is not one person who has lived long enough that has not experienced some type of depression.
