I can't speak for everyone else, but the handles work on both of my swinging french doors (and I have two sets of these doors). The only time they don't work is if the floor lock is engaged...I can activate a floor lock on the right hand door if I want someone to use/open only one of the doors.

Usually only one handle works. That handle latches only one door to the other which is held stationary either by sliding bolts mounted on the inside surface of the stationary door or by sliding pins that can be accessed on the end of the stationary door. There are a number of configurations that are used and even on some applications both handles do indeed work.

One works & it's usually the door on the right. The left door's just a decorative knob. Both can be opened though. The left one usually has a tongue & groove latch to release so that both doors can be opened. Depending on where the doors are, they'll open onto a porch, side porch, backyard or other room to make it bigger.

On french doors, both doors open. If only one opens it is a double patio door.

on my doors, only the right opens and there is no knob on my left, just a window to match the right
