Anytime someone tries to offend you, don't get offended. They will never gain any power over you if you don't get offended, for that's essentially what one who purposely offends is trying to do. If the potential offender is not doing it deliberately or maliciously then again there is no reason to get offended.
Easy concept that's very difficult to follow, but there is heaps to be gained by practicing it.

Eddie Murphy did this hilarious bit as Buckwheat on SNL. It was great, based on the Little Rascal's Buckwheat, which is as old as The Three Stooges.
Don't think there's much to be offended about. Buckwheat wasn't the scruffiest of the Rascals, and just sat around watching the other kids get into trouble and ate desserts whenever he could. Hung out with Mikey, I think, and Petey, the dog.

The term is referred to the character who played Buckwheat in the little rascals. Now in the years/decades following this series, many blacks in television and film were often referred by names such as "Buckwheat", "Aunt Jemima" and or "boy". Basically the term is referring to blacks in a degrading manner.
Now should you be offended? Well only if you let it get to you. People can be very ignorant and not realize it. Often at times people will say things and not really know what they truly mean. I say brush it off your shoulders cause you have more class.

Buckwheat is a grain that is made into buckwheat flour. You can get Japanese buckwheat noodles, or American buckwheat pancakes. It is also considered a health food. Why should you be offended by someone else's rudeness or stupidity?

Buckwheat was a character in an early children's movie feature, and I believe that character was black.
Buckwheat is literally a mix used to make pancakes.
You should probably not take offense even if the person using the name intended you to. It is at its worst a silly semi-insult and at its best a term of affection.
I generally try to not take things like this very seriously. Life is too short and there are too many of them.
