You are pointing two extremes,
1. before 9/11 people of the West didn't know anything about Islam.
2. after 9/11 people knew more about it.
Actually, before 9/11. Western people knew about islam somewhat, but after 9/11 event, learning about Islam rose dramatically. Some tried to learn the truth about Islam whether it really teaches terrorism, some tried to find fault, some just tried to look for sites full of misleading informations.
Most Islamic sites reported that after 9/11 event, their webpage views by visitors increased dramatically and continued on recent times.

I think most people already knew atleast a little bit about a religion called Islam but didn't know much about it's teachings before 9-11.
It's after 9-11 where most people came up to me and asked me questions about my faith.

Yes. I lived in oklahoma during the bombing and 9/11. So you do not learn about Islam in history books, but are you aware that Islam Visits prisonish to corvert them and offer them jobs, and protection to turn a Christian into MUslim? Read Malcom X by Walter Dean Myers or watch "Malcom X by Spike Lee.

I had read the Quran more than twice (well before the 9/11 attacks).
I used to be an atheist. Over a period of time however, I grew convinced of the existence of the Christian God, and ultimately committed my life to Christ (e.g., see http://www.godsci.org/gs/chri/testimony/seek.html ).
Cordially,
John

I think that most people were aware of Islam before 9/11. I know I've heard of it most of my life. But when I was a kid, the devoted missionaries who spent their lives trying to convert them to Christianity, usually referred to Muslims as 'Mohammedans' .

Actually , I was fully aware of the Muslim religion, what I was not aware of was the murderous hatred for a country that they were allowed free reign in as all others were before that wretched hateful act.

Mostly true. Here we get a brief lesson "maybe a paragraph" in high school unless one studies religion or reads a lot. Here it seems like a lot of people don't even know about their own religion.

No, we knew. Did you think that we couldn't tell who was burning American flags in Iran, bombing American Embassies in Africa, killing American solders in Sudan, killing innocent tourists in Egypt, bombing tourists in Europe, blowing up Buddhist temples in Afghanistan, or whom was fighting to destroy Israel and kill all Jews & Christians all these years?
Who were all those people dancing in the streets on TV when they heard that 3000 innocent people died in New York? We couldn't tell!
Did you know that America existed before 9/11?
Silly question. ^_^
