i have mild to moderate back pain due to an imflammatory condition in my lower back. my doctor prescribed 10mg of prednisone for 12 days but everything that i have read says to stay away from it. do you think it would hurt me to take it for such a short time. also, i am concerned about weight gain due to steroid use. will this short dose make me gain any weight?

being on prednisone for 12 days wont hurt you at all. I was on 30mg twice a day for 9 years, and that can cause problems. But it wont have any side effects on you for 12 days, if your doc prescribes it for a long period i would request a different medication then. It does what its supposed to though, and it will help with the pain and inflamation. Good luck

Generally we need to take medications as directed by our doctor. If you are concerned about this medication ask your doctor. Tell your doctor about your concerns. It is dangerous to stop this medication on your own, so contact your doctor for information about tapering it. You do not have to take any medication you do not want to, but you need instructions on how to stop safely if you do not want to take it. Predinisone does have many side effects, but it also has many uses. It is up to you and your doctor to decide if the side effects are worth the benefit.

Your answer 12 day is a short time and will probably cause no problem. You said you are doing this under doctor supervison, so your doctor has determined that it is okay, but when in doubt always ask questions. If you have a side effect always tell the doctor.

I have been on prednisolone for 12 years (half my life) as I have juvenille rheumatoid arthritis and lupus. I have been on all different dosages also.. depending on my pain. It would be safe to take it. You're Doctor would know what would be best. The weight gain will not be anything drastic, as you are on a slightly low dose and it is for only 12 days (i was on 100mg once, and my face turned into a balloon). I am back on 10mg now, and I haven't put on any weight.

i have had it many times and 5major spine opperations, you must be carefull not to just stop it, your doctor will reduce your dose gradully, usally it only becomes harmfull if taken for very long periods,i use to be on it for a mounth at a time sometimes longer and i have never suffered any ill affect, but yes you do have to wantc your weight as i allso found it gave me such an apitite wilst on it,you can allso find your face puffs up with fluid this is normall,im sure your doctor knows what he is doing and is doing his best to help you with your back condition, good luck

I would stay away from it, nasty stuff. Not only weight gain, but other issues too. With regards to the inflamation, can't you use some ice or physical therapy? I heard that back patients do well with physical therapy instead of meds. and surgery.

12 days is very short term. I would not worry about it. My sister has been on it for 17 years. Now THAT is long term and she has had issues with it.

I was on it for 2 weeks once for an allergy.

If a doctor prescribed it for you, and you take it according to their instructions, you'll be okay.
