Mushrooms are a dangerous drug to play around with because there are many that look alike, & the only difference is that some are safe, & some are toxic. The variety that get you high are more toxic than safe, & face it they are drugs, so be very concerned. About the signs, if he is still in school, are his grades going down? If he's working, is he chronically late? Is his job suffering? Has he been fired recently? Look for behaviour changes. Are you catching him in lies? Is he stealing from family members? Any dramatic personality changes? Inappropriate mood swings? If he's doing shrooms it's likely he's doing other drugs too. If he's living in your house you have a right to know if he's bringing illegal drugs into the home, so search his room for drug paraphanalia. There will be burn marks on the flat surfaces of furniture, small containers that the drugs came in such as tiny bits of rolled up tin foil, or saran wrap under the bed. Unusual odours in his room. Needles, syringes, hollow parts of pens, or paper clips with burn marks. If there is a vehicle that he has exclusive use of, search it for the same kind of thing. If there is a satchell or backpack search it as well. When he's sleeping, does he sleep longer than normal for a healthy person his age? Is he difficult or almost impossible to awaken? Don't be afraid to reach out for help, there has never been more resources for people dealing with addiction than there is today. Take care & Good Luck.

You should be a little concerned because they are a schedule I drug, meaning that they have no recognized use other than for illicit purpose and most areas of the US tend to prosecute accordingly. Because he's 18 it's a permanent record and will bar him from most state and federal jobs.

Immediate health concerns are pretty low. They are very low on the toxicity scale and deaths from them are pretty much unheard of. You have more of a chance of choking on one than you do of dying from poisoning.

As someone else stated, they are definitely considered to be a gateway drug for other hallucinagenic drugs, specifically LSD.

They are not tested for in standard drug tests, but they are possible to test for via urine test. They stay in your system for 1-3 days.

He is 18, you have to let him make his own mistakes. With some mushrooms there are hallucinations, crazy talk and strange behavior. I guess intervene if he is hurting himself or others.
