anything over about 150degrees ferinheight can give you a burn with a couple seconds of exposure. anything over 175 will probably burn you on contact.

Trying to figure out what the temperature of something is isn't much help. How many of us think to pick up a food thermometer before we pick something up? I don't.

One thing that can make it worse is if the food is apt to stick to your skin. One of the worst things for doing that is oatmeal. It's hard to get off easily, so you end up getting burned worse than you would with something that you can just brush off.
