Chickens are decedents of the Jungle Fowel (Gallus Gallus), which is still found in parts of Asia. It is found mainly between Kashmir and Cambodia. It is thought to have first been domesticated around 3000 ad in India or Burma. It has been mentioned in Egyptian manuscripts. The Egyptians were (as far as we know) the first peoples to mass incubate these creatures' eggs in very elaborate artificial incubators using fires and multi layered constructs. These constructs had numerous chambers with doors that controlled temperature. It's thought they could incubate over 4000 eggs a day in one of these artificial incubators.

It is thought that chickens were first bred not as food but as divination tools for religious purposes. Apparently the way they pecked at food was seen as a way of predicting destiny.
