I recently purchased a bottle of Patron reposado tequila for $58 US dollars. I've compared the taste with a bottle of Zapopan reposado tequila ( $13 US dollars) and found them to be quite similar, so much so that I doubt many people would be able to tell the difference.

What is your opinion of Patron versus other reposado tequilas?

I totally agree that it is overrated....

At my new years party I had an expensive bottle of Patron and some cheap bottle of tequila from Longs Drug.

I poured tons of shots and SO many people were like "omg, this Patron is AMAZING, i can totally tell the difference!" Too bad it was the cheap stuff ;)

Let me say this, being overrated doesn't make it a bad tequila, i'd give it about a B grade, I can really only talk about the blanco patron but its highly overrated for the price. You are paying an extra 10+ dollars for the name on the bottle, it shold really be in the 20 dollar range for the 750 ml bottle. I've had it several times, mainly because my friends friend loves the **** and wastes money on it. It has a very small amount of distinct flavors other than maybe grass and a little agave, it is somewhat smooth though but it does not stand out at all. I'm not an expert, i'd say I'm more of an intermediate level with tequila, but you start to realize flavor profiles of different tequilas and patron is nothing complex or special for the price. If you want something good for about the same price and even less at some stores, go with partida tequila, its good stuff and if you want to go cheaper and get a solid tequila I'd go with cazadores or espolon. If your on a budget get el jimador.

Patron is definately overrated...but sometimes you have to weigh the pros and cons. Patron is at every bar and is made with 100% agave, so you always know the quality of the product is going to be as expected. A Cadillac is not a BMW, but its better than a Ford. The key to tequila is that it is made with 100% blue agave. Lots of tequilas use sugar cane or corn syrup to add color and sweetness, this means they are making a cheap product. Tequila sells more than single malt whiskies now in the US and there are so many brands. For cheap margarita tequila, Zopopan works, but it is not a true tequila from a purest's perspective because it is not 100% agave and you can tell. Tequila is not regulated as strictly as other spirits. Brands that are completely overrated are Profidio, Jose Cuervo, Herradura's entry level label, and Corazon. Overpriced brands that are considered reputable are Milagro, Chinaco, Cabo Wabo, and Patron. Try to avoid really "pretty" bottles because that is a sure sign of a gimmick. Tequila has become really overpriced lately, but for entry level brands Hornitos, El Jimador, and Cazadores are worth the price. Exceptional brands include Tesoro, Don Julio, Espolon, Correlejo, Gran Centenario, and Rio de Plata. But, there are countless brands not available in large retail stores that are quality.

I am in a similar situation - I would like to get a bottle of "awesome" tequila and got bewildered by the amount of information, and opinions, out on the net. One Tequila which seems to come up as agreed upon as good to great is Herradura Anejo, I posted it on another board and it was agreed upon as a safe bet...well, for $40-45...The only Tequilas I have had "solo" experience with are Two Fingers (really nasty taste) and Tres Generaciones (I remember it being good on ice). As for looks - I will say Patron has some really snappy looking bottles...I am a sucker for a nice bottle, which can be bad for the wallet.

Jose Cuervo tastes like fermented and distilled garbage packaged in a bottle. The salt and lime (tequila cruda) are designed to hide/kill/mask the taste of nasty tequila. And by the simple fact that you are enjoying Jose Cuervo... it appears to be working in your case. To appreciate the subtleties of premium tequilas, they should be enjoyed straight. Patrón is just fine for a tequila that is widely available at the vast majority of bars and liquor stores. Is it overrated and overpriced? The two run hand-in-hand. The second you think something is overrated... it automatically becomes overpriced. Cuervo could cost a nickel a bottle and it would still be way overpriced as far as I'm concerned.

Yes I have had better less expensive tequilas and even better more expensive ones. It is very good tequila just not for the price a bit over priced making it not a good value. Just like any BIG name you pay more for it..

It is good but at that price you can get much better such as Casa Noble, Tesoro or Don Julio

My personal favorite is Casa Noble, nice aromas, wonderful taste, well balanced. You should try it to confirm the difference between a good tequila and one that is great.

Like most big brands (Grey Goose, Patron, Crown Royal) they benefit from good marketing and allow their product to slip. Highly overrated.

I use to love the silver patron i would drink like 10 shots of that crap. It might taste the same to you but i bet the patron is refined more and you are paying for the name. But its gets you trashed and feeling good.
