It is perhaps a little different for men and for women. For some men, it is more about getting laid. But overall, I would say that dating implies a repeating pattern of exclusive, enjoyable companionship. Dating can involve sex, but not always. Someone you would date is often someone you might consider as a future spouse after a certain time period. Dating is the process of developing an comfortable and intimate relationship someone. It is a way to informally declare your intentions of doing this with another person. A first date is just the possibility of this process starting and the interactions that occur are often quite different than a group setting. Some people who get along great in a group may not be able to successfully interact when one on one. The first date is often the last date.

Dating is more like a test of compatibility to see if 2 people are meant for each other or not.
The distinction is when a girl/ guy likes someone enough to want to know about the other person more, they decide to take that next step by going out on a date.
Sometimes, going out don't necessarily mean marriage! It could just mean enjoying each other's company, an extension of a closer friendship for some or for others a chance to get "lucky", depending on what's on the agenda of the person who asked.

Dating = a meeting between two people that are intending on having an intamite relationship
not to be confused with a relationship which is when after two people have BEEN DATING [or meeting enough times with intimate intent] have decided to make their intimacy exclusive.
normally you DATE more than one person to find someone to have a relationship with. Sometimes people don't intend on getting in a relationship. That means they would rather share inimacy [usually sex] without feeling committed. Otherwise, hanging out is just hanging with someone you enjoy their company. [friend]

There's no clear cut answer to what exactly dating means.
The best way to diifferentiate dating from socializing is that dating is an encounter between individuals who are seeking intimacy, whether it be emotional, physical, or all of the above.
The question becomes, what is intimacy? Intimacy is a level of vulnerability that one exposes oneself to by freeing oneself to admire another person on a deep level, and find warmth in that persons presence.
One might ask, what about casual dating? What about people who date 5 different people in one month?
Casual dating is actually more similar to socializing than dating, except it may include sexual relations without sexual intimacy. (read above for intimacy defined).

Good question. This really is.
This is a loaded question. Why date? Does that mean you are sort of committed? If not, are you allowed to test drive, see other people? If not, then get married on the first date.
Does dating entitle you to physical intimacy? If you don't then hanging out with the guys is like a date to.
No matter what you do, she'll get p|ssed at you. You are stuck.

What it really means is to find a husband/wife. And not to get laid, christains don't do that. Why they do this is beacause people are looking for soul mates. So for example if there Dating for a about a year around there the man/women askes to marry them if there relationship is doing ok. So it is kind of shoping.

Dating is the stage where you would like to get to know the person you are with . I think it's the most fun part of the whole "relationship" because you get the chance to really connect with the person. There are lots of ways to do it too, you can fiddle through cool dating sites like webdate_dot_com there are a lot of date_worthy men out here, it's so cool!

Dating is either spouse shopping or looking to get laid. You got it right. There is no other reason for dating. Dating is the human "mating dance."

I always thought it was something where you try to get to know someone better so you can figure out if she has the potential to be a girlfriend and then possibly a wife but I don't even see that these days. Now It's all about having sex for the most part.

Dating is those brutal preliminaries that has a very positive side. Dating is your opportunity to do some careful investigating that will help you decide whether or not a particular person has long term potential. Use dating to your advantage. It requires caution, judgment, and common sense; Don't reject a person just because there is no immediate chemistry. Sometimes you just need to know the person better. Don't be so blinded by lust that you fail to pay attention to any of the following: their attitude towards men or women in general their attitude towards money. their attitude towards your career. their attitude towards your family. their attitude towards their career. their ability to share. their ability to play fair. their ability to laugh. their ability not to take themselves too seriously. their ability to take themselves seriously enough. their addictions. their politics. their religious beliefs. their values. their neuroses. their history with men or women. Dating is something you do to find out whether or not you want to get involved with someone... so take your time.
