The technical name for a fart is 'flatus' and flatus is produced as a result of bacterial activity in the large intestine. These bacteria ferment undigested food, releasing nitrogen, carbon dioxide, hydrogen, methane and hydrogen sulphide. Hydrogen sulfide, by the way, is what makes a rotten egg smell bad. sulfur and other gases, seriously think about all of the bacteria in your intestines. As the bacteria break things down it causes chemical reactions and sometimes smelly ones.

Sulfur...eat cabbage,beans,Taco Bell...it's gonna smell real bad..It's the sulfur in it that makes it smell so rotten.

its the methane gas, the smell can allter depending on what you have eaten,as it breaks down in the intestine it produces gasses
