The Maya's world ended back round 900 AD. I don't think they are a reliable source of predictions about when the world might end.

I can see no likely mechanism, with the possible exception of an asteroid strike. However the only known earth crossing asteroid of sufficient size to end life on earth is known as (29075) 1950 DA. It is expected to pass very near or possibly strike the Earth around the year 2880. We will be able to firm up the prediction as the time gets closer. Due to imprecise knowledge of the asteroid's speed and location it is impossible to say yet if a strike is a real possibility or not

It could happen but it is really pretty unlikely. World ending sized asteroid strikes seem to occur on average about once every 100 million years or so. So the odds of one happening anytime in the year 2012 are on the order of 100,000,000 to 1 and about 40,000,000,000 to 1 that it will happen on that particular date.

The Maya would have had far less capability to predict such an event that we do, and we don't know for sure. I doubt the Maya even had any idea that the Earth is a planet let alone have any idea what an asteroid is or what the impact of a large one would do.

There is an interesting coincidence though which you might find significant. The asteroid that is thought to have ended the age of the dinosaurs, which is the last world-ender to strike, hit about 65 million years ago just on the northern tip of the Yucatan peninsula, leaving the the 112 mile wide Chicxulub Crater, which is remarkably close to the home of the Maya. That asteroid is thought to have been 6 miles in diameter and impacted with the force of about 20,000 billion hydrogen bombs.

That by the way gives you a sense of how hard it actually is to end the world. Not so easy as everybody thinks.

According to one group of people who follow the Mayan calendar system, that's the end date. Of course, you should know that over the last two thousand years or so, thousands of end date predictions have been made by thousands of people--and all of them have been wrong. No one can predict anything, though they do spend enormous amounts of energy trying to convince other people that they can.
