Alcohol affects every organ in the body. It is a central nervous system depressant that is rapidly absorbed from the stomach and small intestine into the bloodstream. Alcohol is metabolized in the liver by enzymes, however, the liver can only metabolize a small amount of alcohol at a time, leaving the excess alcohol to circulate throughout the body. The intensity of the effect of alcohol on the body is directly related to the amount consumed.

Most beers contain alcohol (there are some non-alcoholic beers). When you drink beer with alcohol, that alcohol enters the blood stream through the lining of the stomach and crosses the blood-brain barrier to affect the brain. Alcohol mostly affects the cerebellum which is responsible for our coordinated motion and motor functions, it also affects other parts of the brain that affect our higher cognitive abilities like judgment and spatial relations. Alcohol also depresses the nervous system and slows breathing. All of these effects is what describes the experience of being drunk, and that is why beer causes us to be drunk.

Beer contains alcohol. ANY beverage with alcohol can get you drunk. Even things like Vanilla extract or Mouth wash (if you drink enough of them)

One beer is about the same as the average glass of wine, or 1.5 oz of hard liquor.
