This is a good question, but I think that there is more to it than a Christian / non-Christian binary conflict. Beware those who make it sound so simple.
Part of the conflicts among people is rooted in the desire or need for identity. This struggle inside of each of us to have a sense of understanding our place in the universe manifests itself in many ways. Often we locate ourselves in relation to the world around us...the people, places, and things we come in contact with. As we experience the world, we place lables on things based on the various traits that either are similar to or different from our own, i.e... Christian/Non-Christian, or black/white, good/bad. These lables are oversimplifications of the truth, we use them because we often don't have the time, will, or capacity to really investigate the entire truth of what something is. What this provides though is a language of solidarity for groups of people who agree on the importance of certain traits over others. Also this created division between groups who have various belief systems.
Another cause for conflict, probably the largest motivating factor in any conflict, is economics. Two groups might find a water source that can only maintain one group, and without water people will die. In order for one group to feel justified in driving away or killing the other group they must see the other group as different. I won't bore you all with an entire lecture on economics, but look into it.
So... In larger urban areas where various people from all over with differing world views come together, the differences become less significant and the culture blends, often becoming less religious and more secular. This blending of cultures also means sharing ideas, which becomes more informative education. In smaller areas a more religious focus ties the community together. Again this is really another oversimplification, but I want to provide a little more information than just saying "because you are stupid". Because of certain prejuduces people develop such as city folk/country folk or fanatic/educated, people get frustrated when the hold a certain trait but don't fit the stereotype. You might be a smart person(but I wouldn't use I.Q. as a validation of that) you might be tollerant and kind. You might even live by the golden rule in every interaction, but you can't erase all the experiences someone else has had in their lives. Their prejiduces are their own just as yours have nothing to do with them. Don't let other people's ignorance get you down. Have patience, temperance, fortitude, and all that stuff.
I don't believe in a god, but I do believe in the relevence of gods in societies. If yours works for you cherish it like a treasure and don't let someone elses negativity turn your belief in your god into a battle. Life is tough enough without your beliefs causing you pain. Take care.

Because we are forgiving and caring. We believe in mankind as a whole and know that through prayer we get comfort and answers. This is something non-Christians do not get, I do not believe twhen they call us stupid they are rnot eferring to intelligence just our way of thinking and looking at things. They also know we are taught to turn the other cheek, if it is not a tree or an animal they are not quite sure how to handle it so if you were a spotted owl or other endangered species they would rally around you but a Christians now they are not worth the time of day.
Your IQ is impressive but your Christianity now that is awesome...God Bless

it's sort of like propaganda designed to make the percieved enemy look less than human; maybe even sub-human. if this is done successfully the opinions and views of the christians aren't taken seriously.
i think there is a greater trend toward this today because racism is no longer acceptable as it once was, even in the 70s. all those attitudes have been refocused on other segments of the population and christianity and other religions seem to be included in the hit list. this is just another example of the signs of the times.
you know, my iq is 184 but i'm afraid to take another test because, what if i don't score as high? so i'll just stick with 184. don't let what people say make you feel bad.

I am a non-believer and I don't think Christians are stupid. I do think they are a little slow to figure out what's really going on. Most Christians became Christians because their parents were Christian. So, they never bothered to think about it. They just accepted it. They never really believed it, but they figured that they would in time. Well, belief didn't actually come. What came was an habitual acculturation, a oneness with their family and friends and the comfort of knowing that they didn't have to think for themselves. And, they got lazy and didn't use their intelligence for analyzing the numerous biblical references. Why should they? Afterall they always had God's interpreters (preachers) to explain everything to them. No, they're not stupid. Just slow and lazy. It's a lot easier to memorize God's words.

Anyone who calls another person stupid for their spiritual beliefs is ignorant. My issue is with people who do not attempt to question their beliefs from time to time. God gave us the gift of rationalization (some more so than others). Copernicus challenged the church's belief of geocentricity and took a lot of heat for it but he turned out to be correct in the end.
Don't believe in something just because the church or some preacher on tv tells you to and don't be closed minded to other ideas or you'll be just as ignorant as the non-christians described here.
Notice I didn't say stupid and never would for that matter.

Because if you believe, promote, and demand that other people start believing in something that is inherently non-provable, and speculation by its very nature... then you're stupid.
You just are stupid, learn to live with it.
If you don't recognize why all religion is inherently stupid by this point you never will, and your opinion will continue to be irrelevant to everybody with an IQ over 70 for the rest of your life.
So enjoy your guns, tell little girls not to use condoms, and whatever other stupid **** you do because somebody else told you so.

You can attribute most of the problem to a basic lack of knowledge and understanding about exactly what we believe, and particularly about why we Christians believe in Jesus. But then, most Christians are under-educated about the Lord, the Bible and walking with Christ.
Or, you can yourself simply recognize that the Lord darkens the understanding of the fool that says in his heart there is no God.
Read your bible well, the answers are all right there. Including the answer to this question you have posed.
God bless ya!

i'm an ex Christian, now an agnostic. i remember believing that Christianity was the ONLY true path to God and anyone who didnt believe as i did would end up in hell. now i think believing that was stupid. i was being a prideful spiritual egotist. no God concept is more valid than another. all God concepts are true (for the believer) and all God concepts invented by humans are certainly inaccurate for what puney human can know all that God is or what God intends? (if God intends anything).
and it's stupid to expect "non-believers" to believe as you do just because you claim biblical authority and threaten them with eternal damnation if they dont conform to your belief system. its stupid to believe that an all knowing Supreme Being would create a soul knowing in advance that the soul will be damned to infinite torture (unless you believe that said Super Being is simply sadistic). believe the bible stories to be factial if you like but in my opinion its stupid to take cultural myths litertally and even more stupid to demand others to do the same. its stupid to expect modern rational people to believe in human blood sacrifice, ritual cannabalism, that a woman can be turned into a salt lick, that the sun stood still in the sky (um ... that the earth stopped its rotation) so a Hebrew hero could finish a battle or that an old man built a boat big enough to carry mated pairs of every animal in the world (insects, fish and birds included one presumes) along with enough food for all for 40 rainy days. ( i wont even get into the logistics of manure disposal. thru that one tiny window perhaps?) oh on and on the stupid things Christians demand nonbelievers to take literally and on faith just b/c they say so.
i don't believe that Christians are inherently stupid. i wasnt but i sure believed in some stupid things when i was a Christian.
of course it's not only Christians who pat themselves on the back for having chosen the "right" religion. all religions congratulate themselves on having a monopoly on "The Truth".
i'm an agnostic now because my religion is self honesty and in all honesty i dont know what God wants, if God wants anything or even if there is a God anything like what humans imagine. if religious folks were self honest they'd have to admit the same.

I often come across Atheists on the internet who stereotype all Christians as being stupid...
I think this is a mental-defense mechanism (so that such atheists do not have to rationally consider the evidence for God)...
For instance... for scientific and intellectual evidence for the existence of God, see http://www.godsci.org/gs/godsci/evidence.htm
I used to be an atheist. Over a period of time however, I grew convinced of the existence of the Christian God, and ultimately committed my life to Christ (e.g., see http://www.godsci.org/gs/chri/testimony/seek.html ).
Cordially,
John
