Although God gave us wonderful reasoning ability, we still need His guidance. Like children, we are not able to wisely direct our own steps on the road of life. We are too emotionally wrapped up in our daily living and in our desires, to see the path of life objectively. Counsel from our heavenly Father is needed to point out the way that is for our best interests. “I well know, O Jehovah, that to earthling man his way does not belong. It does not belong to man who is walking even to direct his step.” (Jer. 10:23)
Our way through life does not belong to us to direct as we please, as if we possessed absolute freedom. Jehovah has given us a relative freedom within the bounds of his just laws and Scriptural principles. By going beyond those bounds we do injury to ourselves and to our relationship with him. By staying within those bounds and by permitting Jehovah to direct our steps through his Word, we will do well.
Our own experiences and the experiences of others remind us daily that one is not born with a good heart and a bent of mind toward righteousness. The heart can be deceptive, and working with the heart is tricky. If we are not careful, we become the victims of self-deception. The Bible warns: “The heart is more treacherous than anything else and is desperate. Who can know it?” (Jer. 17:9) And when the heart wants something desperately, this can lead to serious trouble.
The apostle Paul confessed that his renewed mind was being warred against by the bad desires of the heart and the imperfect flesh: “I really delight in the law of God according to the man I am within, but I behold in my members another law warring against the law of my mind and leading me captive to sin’s law that is in my members.” (Rom. 7:22, 23) Paul acknowledged that only Jehovah through Christ could rescue us from this miserable state. Left to our own devices, we would certainly go astray many times. “Many are the plans in the heart of a man, but the counsel of Jehovah is what will stand.”—Prov. 19:21.

This is a GREAT question! I know exactly where you're coming from, though I fear most Christians won't have a clue ..... Not that they're bad or wrong, but that they're often far too willing to listen to the spouting of oft-misinformed or otherwise messed-up preachers and clergy. These people give their interpretation of the Bible, and their followers accept that interpretation as the word of God ..... even if it is in error. If God wanted us to sift through the enormous amount of misinformation out there, wouldn't he have made it possible? I think he did. But turn to your heart and soul as it listens to the Spirit, and try to explain that to some so-called Christians, and you may as well be blaspheming against God and the Bible, as interpreted by their preacher. Remember clearly Paul's words, "For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God," and "Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered," and finally, "And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God." (Rom. 8:14, 26-27)
Not only does the Spirit lead us to the truth of God, it also opens up communion between us and God. If someone refuses to accept that your heart, as moved upon by the Spirit, doesn't accept the dogma of a preacher, THEY are in the wrong. Seek truth and not only will you find it, it will find you.

the point of the Bible is to train the heart, not to rely on it.
Pro.14:33Â In the heart of the understanding one there rests wisdom, and in the midst of stupid ones it becomes known.
Pro 15:7Â The lips of the wise ones keep scattering knowledge about, but the heart of the stupid ones is not like that.
Pro15:28Â The heart of the righteous one meditates so as to answer, but the mouth of the wicked ones bubbles forth with bad things.
Pro 16:16 To earthling man belong the arrangings of the heart, but from Jehovah is the answer of the tongue.
Pro18:12Â Before a crash the heart of a man is lofty, and before glory there is humility.
Jeremiah 17:9Â “The heart is more treacherous than anything else and is desperate."
Re:The soul. Gen. 2:7: “... proceeded to form the man out of dust from the ground and to blow into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man came to be a living soul.”
Notice this fact, 'the man came to be a living soul', not the man was given a soul. The simplicity of this is further clarified at Gen 3:19... "For dust you are and to dust you will return.”
Just thought you might find these items interesting!
Nowhere in the BIble is a Christian encouraged to "listen to their heart." They are challenged instead to make the truth their own by learning the depth and width of God's word and to actively apply it in their lives. This is what it means to be born again. BY making their minds over to the mind of God.
Eph.4:22Â that you should put away the old personality which conforms to your former course of conduct and which is being corrupted according to his deceptive desires; 23Â but that you should be made new in the force actuating your mind, 24Â and should put on the new personality which was created according to God’s will in true righteousness and loyalty.
Romans12:12 Consequently I entreat you by the compassions of God, brothers, to present your bodies a sacrifice living, holy, acceptable to God, a sacred service with your power of reason. 2Â And quit being fashioned after this system of things, but be transformed by making your mind over, that you may prove to yourselves the good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

I would guess more often then not. We are human, we want what we want know and we seek tangible solutions. So our hearts and souls can pretty much get us the "quick fix". The verses require us to be patient and wait upon the Lord, and unfortunately, most of the time that's not what we want to hear or do.

Our heart was made and given by God so they go hand in hand. Those who have a pure heart are close to Him,
Matthew 5:8 Blessed are the pure in heart! For they shall see God.
Mat 6:21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
Mat 12:34 (...) For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaksMat 12:35 The good man out of the good treasure of the heart puts forth good things. And the evil man out of the evil treasure puts forth evil things.
1Jo 3:19 And in this we shall know that we are of the truth, and shall persuade our hearts before Him,
1Jo 3:20 that if our heart accuses us, we know that God is greater than our heart and knows all things.
1Jo 3:21 Beloved, if our heart does not accuse us, we have confidence with God.
Now that's listening to your heart!
And if you listen to your soul know that it is delighted in God. For it knows that God made it.

lol silly girl, all those things should line up with each other. if you're hearing different things from your heart than from the word of god, then I'd go with the word of God. It's been around longer and is more proven to be true

I'm a Christian, but more spiritual than religious....my beliefs tend to align with the bible, but I know if I'm living a spiritual life I don't have to worry about whether or not they are in alignment...they will automatically....
