According to many polls, about 85% of Americans claim to be Christians. However, it stands to reason that not everyone who says they are a Christian are truely saved.

I'm curious... Based on your understanding of the Bible, about what portion of these people will actually spend eternity with God in Heaven?

Very few people who claim to be Christians truly are Christians. I would say 99% of Christians are false. Here are some refrences:

Matthew 7:13, 14, 21-23

Notice that in verses 21-23 that Jesus said that not everyone believing in him would be granted salvation. Today, very few "Christians" live up to the Bible's high moral standards. It's as if the only requirement to be a Christian is to be a nice person. However, there is much more to being a true follower of Christ than just being nice. For example, the Bible sheds light on what true followers of Christ would be doing in the last days:
Matthew 24:14
Acts 1:8; 4:20; 5:42
Romans 10:15

The word "Christian" literally means "Christ-like". This would entail, then, much more than just acknowledging that Christ existed. It means living the life of Christ and believing the things he taught. Few professed Christians follow the pattern Christ set (1 Peter 2:21).

this is so true that people believe that they only have to have God on Sundays and theyre automatically saved. its truely sad. you have to carry the Lord in your life always, not just on a few days. have you ever meet someone that preaches the word and then later backstabs and looks down on people? i know a few people like that and i wish that i could make them see that, but, sometimes people are blinded. there are a few number of people that actually that the name of the Lord and will truely be saved. i cant exactully answer you question. only the Lord can answer your question exacually. hope this helps open your eyes more. :))

According to the Bible there is a specific number given and it isn't any 85% of the American population!

Probably only about 10-15% of the aforementioned Americans are actually Christian. It seems as though the term "Christian" has come to mean "anyone who is not a Jew, Muslim, Hindu, or Atheist".

Does the Bible have a 'standard'?

Probably 1%.
Everyone I know who believes in that sort of stuff always adds an extra exception to the rules.

Such as:
"It's OK, I can lie this time"
"I'll go to church more often, soon"
"I went to church last night, so I'm good"
"As long as I believe in God..."
etc....

I know that it is verified at least 50 Million Americans truly are Christian inspite of how many more are labeled Christian.

Good question on Worldwide though.

I think "christian" (little c) is often used to mean "non-Jewish" or "non-Muslim." It is one of the few relgions that are used interchangeably like that.

I doubt there is any way of knowing who will wind up in heaven. I had a wise old lady tell me one time that we'd be surprised when we got to heaven at who was there, and who was not!

That's what's so wonderful.
We all screw up. I screw up. You screw up.
Christ knows that we stumble.
He says that If we confess our sins He is faithful and just to forgive them - thus we can put on a robe of righteousness before the Father.

I quote scripture only so you know I'm not just blowing smoke:

Isaiah 61:10 I will greatly rejoice in the LORD, my soul shall be joyful in my God; for he hath clothed me with the garments of salvation, he hath covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decketh [himself] with ornaments, and as a bride adorneth [herself] with her jewels.

You may be referring to Matthew 7:22.
Sad but true. It's a relationship thing.
You can't just eat the bread, drink the juice, write a check and call it good to go.

I try my best to act as the Bible would want.
I am human, so I slip up.

But, so many of my friends claim they are Christian, and act nothing like it.

I'm sure the 'real' number is much lower.
