Some people find the consumption of food comforting. Many people also stop eating.
I have done both, and neither help.

Some people eat, some people stop eating. If you're the kind who eats, it's probably because it makes you feel better, or distracts you temporarily from feeling bad. Ever see a toddler cry, and then right away the parent pops food into their mouth? That's where we learn to do that.
Best thing is to try to replace that eating with something else. I used to eat when I was depressed, and now I go for a long walk, a jog, or take a hot bath. I lost lots of weight that way!

Because food represents comfort to many people. Therefore eating comforts the depressed (or angry, or sad) person. Food becomes a substitute for dealing with inner emotions which can lead to a food addiction.

I believe that for some, depression leaves a feeling of emptiness in the pit of your stomach. Food is like a crutch, a temporary way of "filling" that void.
On the other hand, some people lose their appetites completely.

Because the deliciousness helps you feel something similar to a release in endorphins or melatonin which would cause feelings of happiness or well-being. Eating gives instant gratification and pleasure and is a temporary escape or substitute for other pleasure or peace.

Part of it can be due to boredom but mostly its because of what is in the food that tends to make you feel comforted. Just like some foods are considered aphrodisiacs and bring on other feelings in your body, chocolate tends to comfort you and give the body a short term high or happiness.

I agree with no one depression is a state of mind and its only mind over matter so if you decide it does not matter than you won't eat as much and may not be depressed
