I had all 4 wisdom teeth out a month ago, and also had an infection, and I have to tell you once they were out it was immediate relief. My biggest problem was nausea from the anesthesia.
However, since you smoke there is a good chance for dry socket- I have heard the pain is really bad. I think when it happens you have to go back in to your oral surgeon, and they pack it with gauze soaked in oil of clove, which is supposed to provide quick relief. Also, you should get some prescription pain killers too (they gave me Vicodin) so that should help.
Good luck!!

i don't smoke, so i can't completely answer your question. i did however, get all four of my wisdom teeth removed last spring. i was put under locally, didn't feel a thing the whole time. afterwards it was sore and bled, but did not bother me a whole lot. i recovered from the intial surgery in three days, but it took me about 3 weeks to totally heal up the surgical site.
i reccomend not smoking at all afterwards, possibly get a patch to use...rinse your mouth frequently with salwater, and bite on damp teabags to clot quicker.
all in all, getting your wisdom teeth out is no worse than getting a tooth pulled.
EDIT: i was prescribed percoset(sp) but did not even fill it. ibprofen was good enough for me.

Morphine is far too strong for that, and if you're allergic to it you're definitely not going to get it. Usually they give you Tylenol 3's which in my experience don't do much but make you sleepy and dizzy. If you're really in a lot of pain, then you can call your surgeon and ask for something stronger, but over the counter extra strength advil works pretty well for wisdom tooth after pain.

It doesn't hurt to bad but I had a few teeth pulled before so I knew what to expect. But it doesn't really hurt. I didn't have dry sockets so i don't really know if they hurt much.
