I recently rescued a female great pyrenees about 3 months old from an animal shelter, she has 2 due claws on each back foot for a total of 6 toes. I was wondering if anybody might know why. Thanks.

It's the genes of that breed. In show dogs, a Great Pyrenees usually is disqualified, if the double dew claws are not present. It's due to the working cause that the breed was bred for. The double-dew claws help maintain a better grip and balance.

Mine have a million dew claw at the front, and 2 dew claws on the hind legs, which menas a finished of 5 up the front, and six in back. Double dew claws in back is uncomplicated. do not get rid of any dew claws on a pyr. they prefer them. i believe they can use them in a way reminiscent of our thumbs.

It's just a wierd occurance like a cat with dubble paws. My dog had them too but I was able to get them removed when he got fixed. No more worries about what he'll get them cought on.

Sometimes they are born with deformalities. It's not a very serious thing.
