If that's your attitude, I bet they don't want your "gift."

Depends on your relationship with them. Uaually it is not necessary. However, they do apprecite gifts, and they will usually reciprocate with more.
If you are visiting a casual friend's family, something like fruit basket will be nice, or something from your country will be interesting for them. They are usually curious about goods of foreign origin. Something simple will do, like a picture, hometown souvenirs, etc.
If visiting a family of closer acquaintance, then a bottle of whisky will put you in good standing. Johnny Walker Black will be better than the Red. Gold, even much better! You can even try a bottle of wine. Brandy not so well liked.
Of course the gift will be better if someone is of more importance. So as they will always say, it is up to you. Thai hospitality is great. Bring a gift and see the after effects.

Of course, you do have to. If the family knows in advance that you are coming, they really do expect a gift from you. The thing is not the gift, but the thing is you get them something and they will remember you as a giver or a kind person. If that family has a kid, don't forget to give something to him. Most parents don't need anything from themselves...

Usually a very good idea - conveys respect to your host. Does not have to be anything extravagant. If you could bring something small and inexpensive from your home country, that would be ideal.

if you are from the US, just bring something from the US - candies to anything cool - anything from the US just makes it look "wow" - anyway, just bring a little something it doesn't have to be pricey or anything - remember, its the heart that counts
