I'm so sorry about your diagnosis! My mother has had RA for the last 20 years, and I just wanted to let you know that while it took a while to find the right medication for her, she has been mostly pain-free the vast majority of those two decades. She has periodic flare-ups that can be painful, but they are always of a finite duration and after a medication juggle, she always gets back to a place that's pretty normal.

She takes methotrexate, but it's a bit of an old-school treatment for RA. It's been very effective for her, but can have a lot of very bad side effects. There are LOTS of new medications on the market for RA that are very very promising. So, think positive and make sure you have a doctor that you feel like you can really talk to -- that's been the number one most important aspect of my mother's care for the last 20 years. A good doctor who listens!

As "old lady" as it sounds, you might also want to consider subscribing to a magazine called "Arthritis Today," which is full of lots of helpful articles each month on a variety of arthritis conditions, including RA. It'll help you stay on top of the latest developments in treatments, and also give you plenty of good advice on diet, exercise, and coping.

Also, don't hesitate to consider counseling at some point as well. Chronic pain is enormously stressful and it can lead to a wide roller coaster of emotional ups and downs that only feeds into your exhaustion and your pain. Take good care of yourself, stay as active as possible, and listen to your doctors, and I predict you will feel better soon! Good luck, and hang in there!

You need to really take care of yourself. Check up on some of the things that doctors might prescribe. Some have really bad side effects. Research the different treatments, and talk with your doctor about which one is best for your lifestyle and health and how bad your arthritis currently is.

I have had a mild case of RA for quite awhile. I have large knuckles and my handwriting is not what it used to be. But otherwise it isn't much of a problem for me. I find water exercise helps. There are varying degrees of severity of RA. I hope that you are one of the lucky ones.

I have osteoarthritis. I take my medication every day. Some days are better than others. But I just keep going. Talk with your doctor and keep him/her in the loop. You know your body better than they do and as a result when you think something is wrong talk to them. Good Luck
