Talk to your dentist. He can check to see if there is any damage to the teeth. Your child will probably outgrow this, but in the meantime there may not be a way to stop it completely. The linked article has some interesting information on this topic.

My son did this as well. But he did it to the point where he was grinding his teeth down. SO, our dentist recommended the rubber mouth guard that is used for football. You boil it and mold it to your mouth. Worked like a charm. It's too big for them to choke on and after a few nights they'll be used to it being there.

Grinding teeth can actually cause alot of problems so you shouldn't just let it go or chalk it up to "molars". You should see your dentist and see what he says. They can grind the teeth to a nerve. It can hurt their jaw. You really need to prevent the teeth from grinding.

Teeth grinding is a sign of stress. Is there stress in the home?
Mom and dad fights? Staying up late? New baby?

Try giving your child a facial massage before he/she goes to bed at night.
Take some warm olive oil and rub it between your hands, in a circular motion rub around the where the jaw is and chin and also his entire head.

Teeth grinding is not only frustrating and annoying but also painful after a while for your child.
Have you heard of EFT? Look it up, it's called Emotional Freedom Technique.

Good Luck.

My daughter did this (still does sometimes) and her dentist said it is very common for kids around that age because the "6-year" molars are developing and coming up, and it causes pressure on the jaw. The kids just do it to counter the pressure. I dont think it is serious, based on my experience, but mention it at the next dental exam. BTW, the 6-yrs are developing already at 4 - - that was my first question. They start forming deep in the jaw and work their way up, so it isnt too soon to count that out.

Glad you asked this....For all the negative responders out there...I have had my child to the denistist...and he has no answers! I do NOT think my child has any undo stress, and the denist doesn't seem to think it is a prob., So i am going to go with the person who said that teeth are developing (molars)!

I'm not sure but if you find out tell me how to stop my three year old from doing it too. I know people have suggested a rubber mouth gaurd for sleeping, but I don't know if I would do that.

I do this during stressful or traumatic times. Not saying your child is stressed, that's just me.
