I am swimming to stay in shape, not to compete. I do these strokes in this order of frequency: freestyle, breast stroke, and back stroke. I like breast stroke because I like it comes naturally to me and I feel like it produces results! It is interesting to know everyone's opinion... Any sources, though, especially about how real (possibly Olympic) athletes do it? For some credibility since I am getting a lot of variation here?

Whoever says every other stroke doesn't know what they're talking about. Breath every stroke but make sure you do NOT more your head. Use your fingers and make an L then put it to your chest and your chin. your head should not move from this position, breathing every time you stroke.

the rate at which you breathe in the breast stroke depends on the distance of the race. if it's a 25m, i don't even take a breath. for 50 meters, maybe 2to3. for 100 and up, as needed. only beginner swimmers go with a breath every stroke. being full of air is not necessarily better-

All strokes are diverse and all everybody is diverse, so it will be in a unmarried's opinion which stroke is the finest. There are in common words 4 diverse kinds on strokes: Butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, and freestyle. everybody starts out with freestyle even as taking swimming classes, notwithstanding to breast and ultimately fly. maximum people say fly is the hardest and loose the finest.

Well...I generally breathe on every other stroke, but you should do what suits you. If you have studied yoga or are into breathing exercises, breathing with every stroke might help increase your lung strength...if you are concentrating on working your arms and legs, breathing every third stroke might suffice.

every stroke, there is no variation to it, even the olympic athletes do it that way. if you don't breath every stroke, you're doing it wrong.

every other... when you lift your head to breathe it causes more drag... if you can go 3 strokes without taking a breath it would be even better as long as your muscles are not starved for oxygen.
