Cats become people friendly or not people friendly when they are kittens. The more you hold a kitten the more it becomes a lap cat, cat that comes around people, etc.
Cats that are born wild or that don't get much human attention as kittens turn out to be loner cats.
There is no way to cure this but to give your cat attention when it comes to you. To force the cat into hugs, being held, etc will just make the cat not want to be around people even more and make it more of a loner cat.
Just leave the cat alone and when it wants attention it will come around for it.

I have had a cat too that doesnt like to be handled. I just feed her and talk to her and she will follow me around but when I pick her up her ears go back like shes' afraid of me.
I have had her for four years and she still doesnt like being handled. I bought a bath brush with a long handle and thats about as close as shell let me get to her.. but shes coming along.. shell sleep at the end of the bed and watches me closely as long as I dont touch her.. i guess some cats are like that and well the last cat i had was a nuisance always on me wanting to be petted... i count my blessings that at least this one doesnt demand a lot of attention..
some cats like people dont like 'the contact' buy a long brush and give her her space.. she still loves you...

Spend more time with the cat, doing things like brushing the cat, with a decent brush, not those match head type. The cat will probably like the brushing, and want more. I have done this with my calico, and had success with it. Once the cat learns to trust that You will not drop it, it will let you hold it more.

In this case, humor him. He'll come when he wants attention.
My cats don't like to be picked up and held- but they love laps and pets.

Let the cat keep its distance and let it come to you or the guests.
