Feed a dry food with no or little wheat or corn. Make sure real meat is a main ingrediant. Avoid anything with dye like Pedigree, Kibbles and Bits or Beneful. If the kibble comes in different colors it is usually to attract the buyer, and this does not reflect well on the food's quality. If necessary you can mix dry and canned for a while, but dry food is more filling and keeps your pet's teeth much cleaner. Canned food has a high water content and is less filling, it sticks to the teeth and can cause loose stool. It usually has more preservitives too. Dry will keep longer and be more economical.

Actually canned food and dry food are fine. Neither one help or harm the teeth.Brushing will help with any tartar and a young dog to entice it to eat canned is recommended. BUT I would rather if you slowly switched your puppy onto a better diet like Eukanuba or Iams or Science diet or better yet what I have always fed my dogs is a prescription puppy food(etc) from the vets. Please do not constantly switch your dogs diet as it will cause diarrhea and vomiting , they are not like us and need a stable well balanced diet that meets all their needs.Later on in life carrots , apples are fine to give as treats. Please do not listen to dog trainer guy as chicken and turkey will imbalance the calcium to phosphorous ratio in a dog and can cause what is called Rubber jaw.IF you are feeding a GOOD diet you do not need to add extras if anything you will TRAIN your dog to become a picky eater.Yes canned food does have a higher waterr content but puppies dehydrate very quickly and it has been proven not to be deterimental to their teeth as most dogs never chew there food but swallow it whole.Purdue University and Guelph have done years of study on this and the only proven diet that actually as a dry helps the teeth(your dog must be an adult to eat this) is the Hill's prescription diet t/d, NOTHING ELSE.So brush your dogs teeth and feed whatever you want.Remember as an older dog if not introduced to canned at some point and if your dog has bladder stones or kidney failure canned prescription diet is recommended and if never introduced you dog may not eat it.Do realize too that wolves in the wild die at 7 years and our pets(live longer) NEED routine dental work regardless and despite eating dry food. So once again get your puppy used to tooth brushing. It will not make it that your dog will never need a dental but can prolong it

There should be no problem feeding your puppy both, though there will be an adjustment period, where the puppy gets used to having both, but this should not present a problem. Stick with a wet food primarily targeted for puppies, as the puppy is still growing, and will need a different diet than an older dog would.
Hope this helps.

It is a good idea to change food every few months, so they get a variety of nutrients. That said, Purina is not a good quality food. The foods sold in supermarkets and large pet stores are lower grade meats, many from diseased animals, and unhealthy additives. Go to a smaller, upscale pet store that has healthy foods. Some brands are Spots Stew, Chicken Soup for the Dogs Soul, Solid Gold, Merrick, California Natural. You can mix brands, you can mix wet and dry. You can also add food that you make for yourself as long as it is healthy such as scrambled eggs, chicken, turkey, lamb, veggies such as peas, zucchini, carrots, fruits such as tomatoes, avocado, bananas, watermelon. You can also jazz up the dog food by mixing in canned chicken or turkey. Make sure everything is low sodium and low fat. DO NOT give any chocolate, raisins, grapes, macadamia nuts or onions. When you give new foods, do it gradually - a small bit each day to avoid diarrhea.

They need to stay on the same food & It should only be dry. Wet is BAD for their teeth. VERY BAD !!!!! The dry gets the plaque off better. You should wean her from the purina puppy chow to a better quality purina or science diet formula.

It is okay to feed your puppy only dry food as her main diet. You can feed her wet food as a treat, but it's better for them to eat mostly dry food. Also, look at the ingredients on the bag of dry food. The first ingredient should be a meat, such as lamb, chicken or beef. This is the best kind of food for puppies and dogs to eat, it helps them to grow healthy and strong! (i got this advice from several vets)

Wet good is bad for pups and dogs. It leaves a foul smell in their mouth and can cause tooth problems. I only give my pups and dogs a Superior food (anything by Purina is crap, not meaning to sound rude, but it is fillers and corn, no dog can properly digest that type of food, you will get more poops, stinky, buy more dog food, they will need to eat more to fill full). Give puppy a good dog food, from a pet food store in the know and your puppy will have nice breath, small poops and glossy fur

This is the deal...I recently rescued a golden retriever puppy(about 7- pounds of puppy) and she didn't have a lush coat, much energy, ratty tail; she had also been used as a breeder dog, so I started with wet, but too rich and too hard to train with; started using Beneful dry with veggies and either fish or meat! She went from raggedy to full, healthy coat, peppy, pooch! I even have my 2 neighbors with 4 dogs total using it; they love it, too. Oh, yea, only give them people food as a treat...

My vet said all they need is dry made for puppies. It has more calcium to build growing bones. Its all they need, moisten it with warm water til they get all their teeth, gradually give it dry with a bowl of water to the side. At 8 mo, introduce 1-2 tbl (for small dogs) canned each am, but then dry the rest the day. At 1, give dry food for adult dogs, different vitamins for adult.

Dry with at least a table spoon of wet.
My wife feels the same way, so she buys different flavors of the same brand. You can also try mixing beef or chicken broths with the dry food...dogs love it, but wait until she is about 8 months.
