I have an 18 month-old son who I stay-at-home with. My neighbor has a 2 year-old girl. The girl's mother is going back to work. I offered to care for this child in my home along with my son. Do you think this will have any negative effects on my son, such as in development or quality time spent with me?

It would probably be a good thing for your child. I suggest you try it on a trail basis and don't lock yourself into it right away. Your son will have a playmate and she'd older which can sometimes help him learn new skills. Just be sure he keeps a bit of his own routine (naps and meals, etc.)

I have an only child and I find I can get more done when my daughter has a playmate around. They keep each other busy. :)

Also if it's going to be on-going you should be paid for it. And if the child is sick she should be kept home.

I did this for a while, and it was really nice for the neighbor. I found myself, however, looking disfavorably on the child that wasnt mine because 1) she wasnt mine and 2) she was a bit older, but at that age a little older means a lot different! Things I thought were naughty or disobedient were normal 2 yr old behavior, but having not raised my child past that first, I didnt know. I tried it for 3 months, but needed to stop. Also, the neighbor started not showing up when she was supposed to, like she would have for a daycare, because I didnt have rules like they did.

In terms of playmate for your son, though, it would be great. Just know what you can handle, and have firm rules about drop-off and pick up times for the mom.

I really don't see the negative effects there. Interaction with other children is essential in a child's development as long as you can handle 2 little ones it should be ok. Actually should be lots of fun...

Actually, I think it's a great idea! Your son can benefit from having a friend around his own age to play with. It could help him learn to socialize with others, and if you're spending quality time with BOTH toddlers, I think both will benefit. Find activities that both can do together, and they can both learn important social skills like sharing, etc. You're a great neighbor!

No unless you have sex with the girl and don't let him join in.
