Baptism is a symbolic expression of a commitment to a belief. It's not the water that's the salvation, it's in the teachings that come as you grow in the church that would hopefully teach you a certain value and belief system. You then in turn will have to decide and put these beliefs into actions that would ultimately define you as a person. There are other ways to join other religions, baptism is more commonly used in Christian religions. If Christianity works for you, and helps you become a good person, then in some semblance, the water did save you...Don't get too caught up in the symbolism and constraints of any one particular religion. If you have one in particular, take time to learn the virtues of the others also.

According to Acts 2:38, baptism is necessary for forgiveness, and forgiveness is necessary for salvation. So to say that baptism saves you is not incorrect. Also 1 Peter 3:21 seems to say that baptism saves you. (Namely because it states "baptism that now saves you...")

PS: I'm not saying I believe it or not, but if you want to know why people believe it, that's probably because it's in the bible. Just a hunch.

In and of itself, water baptism does not save anyone.Water baptism is an OUTWARD action representing a declaration of an INWARD experience.
Water baptism (from the Greek verb BAPTOO: to bury underneath) is the act of completely immersing an individual in water as a sign of their acceptance of the life, death and resurrection of Jesus (Yeshua ben Yosef),of Nazareth,of the their belief in Him as the Son of the Most High God,who died at Golgotha as an atoning sacrifice so that men might find forgiveness of sins, and be reconciled with God.By its nature, baptism is not meaningful to an infant,so one can only dedicate a child to the care of God until such a time as the little one grows to an age when he can decide for himself to trust in the actions and provisions of God through Jesus' sacrifice.
As said before, baptism DOES NOT SAVE.But it does represent the fact that the one being baptized has trusted in the actions of Jesus to obtain salvation on their behalf.

Water baptism is not supposed to save anyone!! You can only be saved by repenting of your sins and inviting God into your heart! Water baptism represents the washing away of our old, dirty, sinful lives and starting over clean, or new and without sin. Of course, since we are all human we will sin again, but we pray for forgiveness and try to do better. Being baptized shows that we are unashamed of our commitment to living our lives for Christ. Water baptism is usually a requirement of joining a Southern Baptist church. No, I am not saying that everyone who is in church is perfect or that they are a Christian. I will say that everyone is welcome and loved in God's house, and what better place can we be, if we are striving to live for God.

im not trying to sound cynical, but how do you know that water baptism did not save anybody?

baptism is about cleansing away 'original sin' because of what Adam and Eve did in the beginning. remember they went against God's wishes and ate that stupid fruit, and gained knowlege?

anyway, other than cleansing 'original sin', it is about becoming a child of God in a spiritual sense.

In the sacrament of baptism, the holy spirit comes down on the baptised. the holy spirit gives the baptised, hope, love, courage. it is a spiritual symbol that the baptised is a child of God.

it is about you, therefore it really depends on what you believe in.

Water baptism doesn't save anyone. Agreed.

But that's not the point of baptism, it's a public declaration of your acceptance of Christ as your savior.

lol that is a funny one but the best one I have seen is that some of these fools think you can wash someones feet and it cleans their sole. What makes people think your sole is in your feet? Or why would your sole be on the top of your head? sprinkle a little water on the top of your head and you are forgiven? Where did that come from?

Oh.. I forgot the bite this cracker and take a drink of this water from the city lake strate from the tap in the bath room that we call holy water and you will go to heaven .. Oh but you have to donate 20% of you income each week so the priest don't have to drink water and eat crackers. He needs high dollar wine and foot ball tickets and a limo to drink it in on his way to the game.

This is hard to answer! Baptism cleanses our soul of original sin. Without it, we are separated from God. Once baptised we are children of God with a perfectly "clean" soul, but sin can make it dirty again. God's grace given through the Sacrament of Penance is like the washing machine. Try to die with a "clean" soul--without stains (effects of sin). Then you will be saved.
