Well, I have had a GSD but now have Whippets, so that answers your question.
It really depends on the kind of dog you prefer. They are very different breeds and it is like comparing apples and oranges.
I loved my GSD, he was fun to work and much more trainable than my Whippets.
But the Whippets are very special and I can't imagine not having at least a couple. They are sensitive, snuggly and affectionate and will expect to be in your bed and on your furniture. They are also very athletic and very game hunters. They are also not highly trainable, being bred to hunt independantly of their people. They are very smart and will get into the darndest things. They can NEVER be trusted off lead because if they see something to chase you probably will never see them again. They will keep your dog yard free of any critters, so be prepared for occasional 'cleanup'. I have had several different breeds, but the Whippets are definately my favorite and I will always have them.
And Whippets are not so much timid as they are independant. They are not at all like most people think. Not timid, not fragile, and certainly not wimpy. They are not raced commercially, and are certainly not abused on the track. They are usually run because they LOVE IT!

A whippet is the best choice out of both, they shed little, they are low maintanence, they grow attached to their owners in a short amount of time, and it is a much different experience of course if you are looking for a dog to just be there or a dog with affection, and whippets are very sweet.

Shepherd...
I have a Shepherd, and they are very protective, loyal, and big.
they pack power, it's a damn good dog to have.... but not a kids dog, they dont like to be malled like other dogs might, but also a whippet can end up with Bi-Polar because they are very sensitive dogs, like pregnant women to be honest, so they like to be loved but they are not the best for love and protection.
if your trying to make a choice, think of what you want the dog for before you choose.

oh by far a whippet, , i love sight hounds, i had a lab greyhound cross for 10 years and although i grew up with purebred labs, i found the cross was the best hunter and friend i ever had.

A whippet. They don't shed as much and they seem calmer.

German shephards are neurotic. You never turn your back on them. They get really weird in their old age.
Whippits are very timid creatures most often because they've been abused by being race track dogs(at least the one's I've seen), but I would take one ANY day over a german shepard.
