I'm planning a long trip on greyhound. If someone have ridden the bus lately, please tell me about your experience.

Thanks,
Anne

If you can purchase the ticket in advance (to obtain lower fares), take the train. Despite it can be late, its a LOT more comfortable, you have bathrooms (several), dining car, in some trains a lounge car and if you wish to sleep, sleeping cars that cost more but are THE way of travel (and meals are included in the fare). You can also reach by bus some cities that are not served by trains and buses leave from the station. Bus are ok for short trips (no longer than 4 hours).

Oh my god ride Amtrak if you're short on money for a trip. I have ridden Greyhound once. I was 10 hours late getting from Pittsburgh to Dayton, Ohio (a total 3 hours trip). I was almost kicked off the bus because I had been on the bus longer than the new passengers coming on. The only way I stayed on was to convince the driver that I was going to get off at Dayton. The bus driver and what I think was a co-driver were both rude and treated everyone in the bus like they were children. They tried to talk down to me, because I was a young, female, and riding a bus. I informed them that I had my Masters in History, earned more than they ever would driving a bus, and only riding the bus because my plane and train reservations had been cancelled and they were my last resort. They shut up after that but they were happy to see me off the bus. The bus stations are also really scary places, I have traveled the subway in New York at night through Harlem, walked through downtown Detroit in the middle of the night, and walked through Southwest Washington DC for my college career. I've never been so afraid for my life at 7am in the morning than sitting in that Dayton, Ohio Greyhound Station waiting on my mother to find me.

Oh dear G-d! I travelled from San Diego to cr@p-middle-of-nowhere-Oregon once. Here is some insight:

Do not sit in the back, that is near the toilet, it smells awful.

Do not go while you have a weakend immune system. There will be at least one ill person coughing and sneezing.

Bring ear plugs or batteries for a personal audio device. Screaming crying infants/children will make you want to bury your head in the toilet.

Bring a sweater. The air-conditioner will probably stay on the whole trip.

Keep essentials in your carry-on/backpack. A few snacks, batteries, CDs, aspirin, sleeping pills, motion-sickness pills, personal wipes (trust me, these can be rather handy, sticky snacks, sweaty face, whatever, it's useful for a quick clean up, especially when you haven't the proper facilities).

Keep your money and ID on you at all times, in a hard to reach/pilfer area. A wallet in your hip pocket is hard to remove if your trousers are tight in the area. Baggy trousers are much easier to steal things from.

Make sure you know exactly where you will be dropped off. Middle of nowhere oregon was a diner on the highway. It was raining, the motel with my reservation was in town...a few miles down the highway. I walked carrying my bags down the side of the highway in the rain. I tried hitch-hiking, but the locals were all *******. I probably should have called a cab, but that didn't occur to me until later. Also make sure your mobile has coverage in that area. Mine did not...stupid middle of nowhere oregon...grrr...

It's affordable transportation, but because of that it's really a bare-minimum set of accomodations.

Not all stops have "full-service" facilities. There were a few with no place to buy food, but I believe all had restrooms...but with varying degrees of "I'd rather dig a hole myself."

Have fun! (It's not that bad really, it's an adventure!)

Bus companies have been getting allot negative lip from their passengers lately so , since I am a Bus Driver ,I decided to port some of the bus exhaust into the passenger area . This makes 90% of my passengers drowsy and shuts them up. I can do this since our buses have a special driver compartment that is sealed off from the passengers so I don't have to inhale the fumes and get drowsy myself.
I recently had one old lady vomit during a long drive across country and I thank my Lucky stars for the sealed driver's compartment because that old hag stunk up the passenger compartment for one hour before we could make our next stop where I could hose out the old bag's barf. You better believe that I hit her with a water shot (by mistake ) for just a second , right in the kisser.
Even with the exhaust fumes pouring in the cabin , the passengers complained about that Grey head's barf odor. At the clean up stop I told her she was going to have to find another way to go for her last 300 miles.
In general all goes well on my bus. Enjoy your trip.

Anne, if your not black then don't do it. Nothing but blacks on those things. Spend a little extra and take a train. Better yet take a plane.. most black folk hate flying.
