It depends ENTIRELY on where he's stationed and what unit he'll be with. If that unit's rotation is coming up then off he'll go but don't forget that he has other training to go through after basic.

BASIC training? Well he's going to go to a tech school (AIT) after that, then to an operational unit. IF that unit is spinning up he'll be training for a couple months before he goes over. That's about the fastest I know it could happen unless he was asking for it. All depends on his job & unit assignment, not to mention what service we're talking about. Just relax for a while & see how things develop. There's nothing you can do about it either way & being worried is only going to drive you even more crazy while you wait.

It depends on the way things are going over there after he finishes. My husband is currently in the Army and just about to be sent home after a rotation in Afghanistan. He has already been told he will be going to Iraq within a year after returning. I would think his MOS is a big determiner in whether he will go as well as the events that go on over there.

I have no idea. But I really doubt it. One of my nephews and my nieces husband have been and returned. They seem no worse for the wear. My brother is returning to Iraq for the 4th time shortly.

I am proud of them for the job they are doing, but at the same time I am concerned for their safety. Its a dangerous job but the rest of us will live in safety only as long as we have people willing to go face our enemies and stand in harm's way.

They won't send troops right out of basic into combat unless things are really going wrong. There's advanced individual training after basic, that generally last a couple of months, then even active units get specialised training for a month or two.

Also the deployments are for several months so it will be next year before the next rotations go. By then I think the number will be reduced to only special units.

Tell your husband thanks for me.

Okay, he has to first finish up schooling that he's going to for his MOS (his military job) and then his chances depends on his unit. If it's his unit's turn then he'll go if not he'll go where his unit is suppose to go but, to be honest with you and since you're a military wife, you should be told this, the chances of your husband going "over there" within the time he's enlisted are very high, everybody within their military career is looking at a deployment at least once. I know this informations sucks but it's the cold hard truth!

Honestly, almost 100%. They are more than likely going to send him to a unit that needs people badly. That could mean a unit that is already in Iraq and they would send him within a couple of weeks to be with them, or a unit that is about to deploy. Deployed or deploying units are supposed to be at like 105 or 110% personnel strength, so they send a lot of people to those units who are just coming in to the military. And even if he doesn't go to one of those units, you are just about guaranteed that he will go and soon. My husband has been in less than 4 years and he has spent more than 25 months in Iraq.

Don't worry though. It's getting better over there, he will be with people who can take care of him, and as bad as the news is there really aren't that many people being killed or injured. Just support him and stay strong and most importantly take care of yourself. You can't take care of him if you aren't taking care of yourself - that's the biggest (and hardest) lesson I've learned over my husband's two deployments to Iraq. It will be ok, I promise.

A lot of new enlistees go right to Iraq. I hate to tell you that, but unfortunately, that's been the way it's working.
