How does the American consumer view genetically modified food?

I read in a British newspaper the other day that 7 years ago 60% of all products in UK supermarkets contained GM ingredients. Nowadays there are only two products on sale in the UK containg GM food. Despite the fact that there isn't all that much evidence to say GM is bad, the British consumers decided they didn't want GM and stopped buying them, and the supermarkets got rid of them as quick as they could. Now that's what I call consumer power.

I get the impression that American consumers are far less skeptical of genetic modification and that GM products are widely available. How aware are American consumers of what's in their food? Do they care about GM or is it not an issue for them? How has the media covered the issue in america?

Personally (remember folks this is just my opinion), I think the bulk of American culture could careless, and who would really, when there is always some kind of terrorist attack or threat being fed to us by the media. The media is very good at the old trick of making us look where they want us to. GM food is a much cheaper way for the producers of such goods to get rich,...and as the producers of such goods gets rich, the government takes it's cut, so why would they make it well known.

In this technological day of hands free convo, and cell phone web browsers it's very hard for most to stay connected with what's really important. They have us scrutinizing arabs for terrorist behavior so closely we can't even see our children stealing Grandma's OxyCodone!

I don't mean to be cynical,...but it's the general moral decay of a fabric or society when presented with false truths to occupy the mind, you watch the magicians left hand when he's taking your wallet with his right, classic misdirection.

Very few (but we are out there), people actually look deeper to find the hidden dialogue, and I applaude you for bringing it to the forefront.

I mean, there are already obvious changes,... look at the breasts on our 13 y/o girls (and I do not mean this in a perverted sort of way), I am saying that through our own scientific splicing of genetic modification with our foods, we've actually stimulated production of puberty hormones earlier and more aggressive in our children. It doesn't stop there, look at the average height of males even 40 years ago until now,...

I do believe it is a serious issue,... and like I said thankyou for the reminder, we all need a prod in the jeans from time to time. You seem a genuine intelligent sort, and I wouldn't mind correspondance from you if you have the time, feel free to email me, it's hard to find people unpersuaded or nudged strongly by the strong forces of faith and government.

It's true most Americans are too inconvenienced to worry about what is in the food they eat. Most of us eat fast food at least once a day. Most of the foods on our grocery shelves are pre-packaged foods. The top two ingredients in the average kitchen, partially hydrogenated oils and high fructose corn syrup. From bread or candy to ice cream and chicken breasts, american food companies find a way to get those two ingredients in their product.

So given that this is a common thing in America, it's not a surprise, at least not for me, that they are equally unconcerned about GM products. Companies aren't even required to disclose whether or not any of their products are genetically modified. As someone who does care, I have to conduct my own research studies just to find out if the tomatoes at my local store are real or not. (Only one of the four varieties available are real, honest to goodness tomatoes.)

Capitalism in America creates inferior products, across the board. The cheaper the raw materials can get, the higher the profit margin, and that is all that matters. It doesn't matter that we're dying of cancer, heart-disease and obesity like they're going out of style, as long as our companies increase their profit by 5% next year.

And there is our lovely media. I'm not sure what it is that they are reporting to the public, but it is not the news. I don't even bother with them anymore, and find out what I can through the internet and books. If someone had a lot of money to gain from getting rid of GM products, it would be cursed as a bane on society for a week on every tv channel and talk radio show here, but, apparently they're making far too much keeping it on the shelves, so the average american hears very little, if anything about it.

Hello Bleh, In the year 2000 This country of ours grew70 million acers of gmo crops. The leading corperation behnd gmo foods is Monsanto. They make round up pesticide which is sold locally at your hardware store. They also make round up ready corn which will not die if sprayed with round up pesticide. They are an evli on the earth and they ram farmers into the ground so they can control farming and get them to grow gmo crops. They go into the seed bank and put a patent on a seed, then genetically modify it and if you a farmer are "caught growing their seed" be it by cross pollination or otherwise you will get sued big thumpin time. This is what goes on in America. Monsanto is not well liked in south america because they have contaminated the crops there! And its spreading elswhere because of them and their greed. Alot of what you eat is gmo unless you go to the farmers market and get the vegetables from local farmers. Americans by and large are not very aware of whats going on because 1 the country is massive 2 the last 50 tears of food propaganda from trix to pop tarts to hamburger helper to velveta cheese(?) has leveled most americans. Who do you think won the fattest nation contest again??? America.
