I have a 4 year old toy poodle, who has been the only dog in my home for 3 years. I recently got a beagle/bassethound mix puppy and he is only 4 months old. She likes to play (pounce, chase, tug on his ears, etc...). Some of this he doesn't mind and he even plays with her, but most of the time her runs from her and hides (like he is scared of her). He seems to be very territorial only of the furniture (he growls and bites at her when she gets on the couch or the chairs). I am afraid that he will hurt her. Any suggestions on helping him learn to get along with her?

after we brought the puppy home she got sick (with parvo). we have spent alot of time and effort hand feeding her and keeping her alive. she is well now....all this started after she was better and started to chase him and nip at him.

Think of it from your poodles point of view- "What is that? This is my house, my owner, and it's taking over everything!!!"
I would recommend lots of comfort for the older dog, make sure that he knows he's not being replaced.
Animal behaviour is very hard to explain using something like this, but your poodles heirarchy has been affected, so he feels really insecure right now. When he growls and bites at the pup he is telling her that he is the boss of her, and she will understand that, but in the meantime it could be a bit rocky between them- give them time and they will sort each other out.
Make sure that you feed them seperately and feed the poodle first. This will reinforce the heirarchy of poodle first, pup second. Dogs feel more secure once they know their "rank". You of course should be at the top of the chain.

It takes time but eventually your old dog will get used to the new one.
I had my dog for a while and he's the type of dog that wants to have all the attention so he wasn't thrilled when there was a new puppy in the family. I mean there would be times when he would attack her and we'd have to separate the two. But after a while he started to tolerate her, and eventually even started playing with her. So just give it time.....there will be fights, I don't doubt it but that is what time outs and separating them is for.

You need to convey to both dogs that you are the "Alpha" in the pack. You are the leader, it's time for the Dog Whisperer (seriously). Caesar Milan is awesome and has great ideas for dogs and us humans. His first season is on DVD. You might give him a try. http://www.NationalGeographic.com/store
The male thinks the furniture belongs to him, even though you paid for it. It's time you reclaim the furniture and anything else the dog or dogs begin to think are theirs. Get their behavior under control now and the future will be bright :)
Walk both dogs to use up extra energy. Get them out in the backyard and play. Help to channel their energy.

Either it's going to take time, or you're going to have to choose between the poodle and the beagle pup. For the time being, separate them from each other when you can't watch them.

hopefully you introduced them on neutral ground (outside the home) because otherwise, the originaly dog will feel territorial
You haave to show them that you are alpha over both of these dogs.
Time will get them used to each other.
When the new dogs gets to buggin the old one, deter him with a toy.

time - think about it. If you had the house to yourself for 4 years and someone new came along wouldn't you have some issues? give your pup time and all will work out. :-)

OHHHH..the white folk hate the black folk and the black folk hate the white folk and the Christians hate the Muslims and the Japs hate the Chinks and...oh-oh-oh-oh...everybody hates the juice. Thank-you. Thank-you. Thank-you very much. Now I'll go back to flipping burgers in a small joint somewhere in Arkansas.

lock them in a room and let the poodle kick its butt then they will get over it and find a pecking order and get along eventually. thats what i do. they either get over it or kill one another. the latter never happens. lolol
