The best time to buy new is when the companies are introducing the next year's "improved" models. The companies want to clear out old stock before bringing in the new stock. These deals might get good near the end of the year, but selection usually dwindles by August. Used cars should be pretty cheap in the fall and spring because people are buying new cars in the fall and looking for new car deals in the spring.

Erm.. Interesting responses.
But. The single best time to buy a new car is when the BODY STYLE of the new year model is changed and in stock. So a 2006 vs. 2007 Jetta might get you a discount if they're looking to clear the lot - usually in early fall. But they'll be desperate if it's the new 2007 body style Jetta to get the old style 2006s off the lot.
Now they'll be eager to make a deal, so you'll get pressured but, of course, you can wait until you get a lot of quotes and get the invoice price from one of many websites.

When the dealerships get the new models in, they want to clear out the previous years models. They will be offering all sorts of deals to get them off the lot fast. Those are still brand new cars! So shop in late summer, early fall, when they advertise the new model years, and pick up a brand new car at a not-so-new car price.

In December, specially models from the past year, por example a 2006 car in dec. 2006. You can have good opportunities as they want to clear the lot a look good with the company.

At the end of the year, or the end of the month. Either one. At the end of a month, dealers are scrambling to make their projections, and are usually more willing to lower prices, as long as you remain firm. At year end, they don't want to have ANY of last year's models sitting around, so they will usually cut prices to get them out. Good luck shopping.
