I am very proud of all of our soldiers. They are very brave men and women. I don't like the fact that they say vietnam was a conflict and not a war, to me it was a war.

A soldier is a soldier, who is a soldier! The context of action which he saw is another page in history that reads the same way W.Eugene Smith hoped men would find appaulling, " Causing them causation, rememberance and realization as to why this criminal stupidity shoud never begin again ".
After all of these years, guys like you still don't seem to get it. Nobody has ever argued against the men who served this counry in Viet Nam, save the very few like the men under Calley at Maili. On the other hand if you volenteered for the determined purpose of policing South East Asia then at most it could be said you were politically very ignorant, yet very brave.
A soldier has the obligation of carrying out the orders he is give. Ours is not to reason why, ours is but to do or die, and you know that as well as I do.
Consider my view of those same years. I saw tanks run through my own town because few in this country had respect for men of colour, and men of colour were tired of it! I was working my way through high school and was asked to donate to the college fund of a friends son. Why? Because that friend like many to come never got to leave Viet Nam alive, and never even understood why hell he was there in the first place.
I managed to get a Scholarship that was never paid and when I asked for a BEG, they told me my income of a whole 4,500 was too high. Eventually I did get to College and study art and photography and tried to work as a Social Documentarian, which was my way of trying to give to this society, despite the fact that it had never given me a damn thing but greif. I got no thanks there either, even though today I have become well know as an important Writting Masters, even by the Smithsonian. But that don' t pay the bills!
I saw all of this and the way the world is today then and wasted my youth yelling and screaming about it. You did your duty as a soldier, I did mine as a believer in the possiblity of a Great Society or the hope of one anyway, and between the two of us, I am the only one who failed.
And yes I was asked to go to Viet Nam about a year before it ended, and I told the FBI man, Socialism is actually the best way to stablize an under developed country. That said I told him push come to shove I didn't have no reason to go half way around the world gettin into a beef on democracy that I ain't never seen with some rice farmer that ain't never called me a ******!
So if your one of those who believes in" my country right or wrong ", I suppose that is better than having nothing to believe in. I believe in the wisdom of compassion and have seen Virtue in humankind nowhere else!

Those who served in Vietnam stepped into an environment our forces had never encountered in combat situations, weren't properly trained for and an enemy who fought dirty on their terms. Vietnam vets didn't and do not get the respect they deserve. They heard the call, answered and were spat on when they returned home, shameful and those who are guilty should hang their heads because they disgust true Americans. Unfortunately I believe that's how many of the veterans of the current conflict/war are being treated.

If in fact you served and fought in the NAM. All I can say is God Bless and thank you. I myself have honored several soldiers from the War. My research took me to the battle of Ia Drang Valley Nov 14-17,1965. I never heard that particular battle until seeing the movie We Were Soldiers starring Mel Gibson and Sam Elliott. I found out my uncle flew gunship over the battle and that I have talked on the phone to many heroes of the battle including two CMH reciepants(Congressional Medal of Honor) from the battle. These people were gracious enough to tell me their story and autograph the book WE WERE SOLDIERS...ONCE and YOUNG. There were many heroes of every battle and still doing research again God Bless.

The American soldiers who fought in Viet Nam were great men and women. They chose to fight for freedom in a far-away swamp. Unfortunately, even though they could win the war, the propaganda war Stateside led to a self-induced loss.
You are an American hero.
That's why we all need to support our current soldiers and their mission. Otherwise, we are headed to another propaganda loss, with cowards in Washington undermining the boots on the ground.

I know a man who fought in Vietnam and I believe he is one of the bravest individuals that I have ever met. If you are anything like he is, then you have my undying respect and endless gratitude for being brave enough to fight for a country that you didn't live in. I know that some didn't have a choice, but even if they didn't have a choice they still sacrificed and didn't run like cowards. I am glad that there are courageous people left in this world.

We got treated like **** when we came home. America turned it's back on us. I suppose I will harbor some resentment over how we were treated. Today's returning vets don't face the somethings we faced on the surface, but take off that thin top layer. There is no where near the funding of the VA, nor the willingness of those who sent them to war, to increase funding. Fact is there are trying to balance the budget on the backs of vets by cutting service or changing the rules to cut vets off. It really gets me mad as hell to send young men and women into the whores of war, bring them home, and discard them has yesterday's newspapers.
It behooves us Vietnam Vets to raise hell and make sure today's vets are cared for not just by words, but by timely actions.
The men I served with and under are some of the best people I have ever known. We are not heroes. We served our country when our country called. I don't think any one in the right mind wanted to go to war, but served we did and with honor.
Thanks for letting me vent.

I respect all soldiers who serve to defend this country but the ones who served in Vietnam, they were not greeted back home with anything but disrespect from this country and I hate that that happened to them! They deserved respect and a proper welcome home and they fought for thier lives no doubt everyday and so when I see a veteran, I show them the respect they deserve!

I highly respect Vietnam veterans and think that the government needs to help them out more because I know two Nam combat veterans, one got into drugs over there and can't get a job which I think is disgraceful.

From a soldier's perspective...those men operated in some very harsh terrain, and they fought against a determined enemy. Each of them will always have my respect.
