Diet pop does NOT have sugar in it! It is sweetened with an artificial sweetener called aspartame. I read labels obsessively.

But I have heard of people talking about studies on artificial sweeteners causing a chemical imbalance and making you gain weight. This would seem contrary to the purpose of saving calories by drinking diet.

Yes. Since your body is expecting the sugar in the soda and doesn't get it, it needs to compensate for the loss, which makes you eat real sugarry things like chocolate to meet your fix. Also, the artificial sweeteners in diet soda messes with your saratonin and makes you depressed. Last one... diet soda weakens your bones.

Apparently this is because the sweeteners used (sucralose or some other types) can trigger sweet cravings because they are so concentrated (anywhere from about 60 - a few thousand times sweeter than sugar), so people will be tempted to consume sugary foods afterwards. There is also studies that show people lose their ability to judge the number of calories in sweet foods after long term consumption of artificially sweetened foods. So if you replace your regualr coke with diet and don't compensate by eating more calories somewhere else you're probably fine.

When you drink diet soda it makes your body think that other sweet things that have cals in them dont. So in turn you will not lose weight if you switch to diet, and it could help you gain weight. Remember reading in I think it was Health magazine or Fitness
