The real horse the movie was based on is real. But it didn't happen quite the way it showed.
Mariah's Storm won the Arlington Washington Lassie, a Grade II was being trained for the 1993 Breeders' Cup--in which she would have been one of the favorites--when she suddenly fractured a left front cannon bone in the Alcibiades Stakes. After her recovery, in August 1994, she came back to win the Arlington Heights Oaks, a Grade III stakes race for three-year-old fillies. In September 1995 she won the Arlington Matron Handicap, a Grade III stakes race for three-year-old and older females, making her the only horse ever to win all three stakes races for her age class at Arlington. This was a feat worthy of recognition - and a race, the Mariah Storm Stakes, is among those raced at Arlington. She DID in win the 1995 Turfway Breeders' Cup. Not the Classic.

She is the dam to several racing champions, the most notable of which is Giant's Causeway, the 2000 Horse of the Year with several top class horses.

Dreamer was based on a true story about a real horse. I think the horse race in the movie was just staged for the movie, and not the real horse who's name was Mariah's Storm

The movie is based on the life of a horse names Mirah's Storm
I do not think that Mirah's Storm won the breeders cup.
She did sustain an injury like Sonya in the movie and came back to race again. But I do not think she won thebreeder's Cup.

the movie was based on a real race horse. the story about the mare coming back to race is true. I don't remember her name but it really happened.

it is supposed to be based on a tre story but I dont know if it is real. quite possible though
