San Francisco of course. The only time I go to LA is to get to San Diego. LA beaches are very nice but the road traffic outways the benefits. The air in LA is not very clean. The problem with LA is that everything is spread out so you have to drive through traffic. If you are going to southern california, be sure to go to San Diego.

San Francisco is the 2nd most densely populated city in the US after New York. If you are planning to just stay in downtown SF, you don't really need a car. There are lots of beautiful sites to see and lots of things to do. You can see all the touristy sites and more. The food in SF is excellent!

However, I suggest renting a car at least some of the time so you can drive to Sonoma and Napa Valley, down the coast to Santa Cruz, Monterey, Carmel, if you have time.

I just got home from my California vacation. My suggestion to you: definitely San Francisco. A real fun and interesting city. However,if at all possible, stay in San Francisco for only a day or two, then rent a car and drive south, down the coast toward Monterrey...see Cannery Row,drive the spectacular 100 mi.drive along the Pacific Ocean cliffs, through Big Sur. Also, take the 17 mi drive, through the Pebble Beach area. Best of all, continue down to San Diego and spend as much time there as possible. The beaches there are beautiful. have a happy vacation.

San Francisco has more to do than LA, though LA has the nice tropical feel with the palm trees and warmer weather. Plus it's close to Disneyland & Sea World. But if you're going to just stay in the city, then definitely SF.

For a more European flavor, you will want San Francisco. For a place that is decidedly American, Los Angeles is more what you are looking for.

They are both fun, but there is more to do in Los Angeles (Hollywood, the theme parks, the beaches and weather) etc.

San Francisco. If you never been to LA, then it is hard to know where to go and it is quite hard to get around without your own or rented car.

San Francisco has excellent nightlife and its a beautiful city, too.

Well. If you have time, check out both but if not, visit SF.

San Francisco is really beautiful and scenic and historical in addition to having the great nightlife stuff.
LA has great nightlife but is not very scenic except right on the beaches.
